Women's Basketball Victorious in a Down to the Wire Finish Against Purchase College

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team took down the Panthers of Purchase College on Saturday in a down to the wire matchup by a final score of 50-46. 
 
The game was filled with excitement, with several lead changes throughout. In total, the lead changed hands four times. 
 
The game got off to a slow start for both teams. Allysha Thomas hit a layup to open the scoring, giving OW the first points of the day. From there, both sides went back-and-forth for a bit. Purchase connected on a three-pointer in the final minute of the opening quarter to bring the quarter to a close even. The score was 8-8. 
 
Old Westbury struggled throughout the second quarter. It took nearly three minutes for the Panthers to hit a basket which came from Tyela Davidson who nailed a three. Despite the attempt to swing the momentum, Purchase could not be slowed down. Purchase went into halftime with the lead, ahead by 13 points, 28-15. 
 
The Panthers of Old Westbury made a comeback in the third quarter. The biggest moments of the third quarter came when Sierra Rowe connected on back-to-back three-point shots to put OW back in the game and close the gap to just five points. As the third quarter came to an end, the score was 38-37, in favor of Purchase. 
 
The fourth quarter of this one featured some of the most exciting minutes so far this season for both teams. Purchase stayed out in front as neither team could hit their shots. Both teams played well defensively. Eventually, Old Westbury reclaimed the lead thanks to a layup from Kasioni Okenwa. 
 
From there, Old Westbury was able to hold on and close out the game. The Panthers of Old Westbury prevailed and defeated Purchase in a close one by a final score of 50-46. 
 
Sierra Rowe led the way for the Panthers as she finished with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Another key contributor for Old Westbury was Allysha Thomas. She finished the game with a double-double and amassed a total of 11 points and 17 rebounds. Phalan Smith recorded 11 points, and eight boards. 
 
Purchase's leading scorer was Jessica McHugh. She finished with nine points and 14 rebounds. McHugh also played very well defensively, recording two blocks and three steals. Halle Greaige finished the game with nine points and 11 rebounds. 
 
Old Westbury was able to pick up their third win of the season in an exciting Skyline Conference matchup. The team will next play on Thursday night as they travel to Mount Saint Mary. That game is set to tip-off at 7pm.
