Women's Basketball Suffers a Tough Loss to Mount Saint Mary on Thursday Night

NEWBURGH, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball suffered a tough loss to Mount Saint Mary's on Thursday night by a final score of 82-27.

The Panthers struggled on both ends of the court in this one and ultimately could not do anything to overcome the powerful performance of the Knights of Mount Saint Mary's College.

The game got off to a tough start for OW as they found themselves down by 13 points before scoring their first points with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter. The Panthers were only able to put up six points in the opening quarter as Allysha Thomas, Tyela Davidson, and Phalan Smith connected on jumpers. The Knights compiled 17 points and led the Panthers going into the second quarter, 17-6.

As the second quarter got going, the Panthers continued to struggle offensively. In the quarter, the Panthers' seven points came from a three-point shot and jumper from Davidson, and a layup from Kasiobi Okenwa. The Knights continued to pile on the points, adding another 20 to their total giving them a 37-17 lead at halftime.

The second half began with three straight scoring opportunities for the Knights. The Panthers' first point of the second half came off a free-throw from Thomas. Okenwa and Thomas added baskets for the Panthers but again OW was only able to tack on six points. The Knights entered the final quarter ahead with a score of 57-19.

The final quarter of play was the highest-scoring period for the Panthers. Smith, Okenwa, and Davidson hit shots, but the efforts of the Panthers fell short. The Knights defeated the Panthers by a comfortable margin and a final score of 82-27.
