Women's Basketball Defeated by St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Saturday

BROOKLYN, NY -  The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was taken down by the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 81-58.
 
The lead changed hands in this one three times, but after the end of the first quarter, it was the Bears in control for the rest of the way. 
 
The game's scoring got going with a jumper from Phalan Smith on the opening possession. Then, both sides went back-and-forth in scoring. In the final minute of the quarter, the Bears took control of the lead and would hold onto it for the remainder of the game. Domenika Sanchez hit a jumper to go up by six and the Bears led the Panthers going into the second quarter with a score of 20-16. 
 
Despite trailing for the entire quarter, Kasiobi Okenwa connected on two baskets for the Panthers. The Bears led going into the half with a score of 34-26.
 
While still trailing, the Panthers put up 13 points in the third quarter. Allysha Thomas hit a pair of free-throws, Sierra Rowe hit a three-pointer, and Tyela Davidson, Rowe, Okenwa, and Thomas contributed baskets.
 
The fourth quarter featured much of the same, but the Panthers continued to try and tack on the points. OW had their highest-scoring quarter of the game. Davidson nailed a three-pointer, Smith hit a pair of jumpers and a layup, and Thomas scored a layup. 
 
In the end, the Panthers' efforts were no match for the Bears who were effective on the offensive side of things throughout the game. The Bears defeated the Panthers by a final score of 81-58. 
 
For the Panthers, Tyela Davidson was the leading scorer. Davidson finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, an assist, a block and four steals. Phalan Smith ended the day with 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Kasiobi Okenwa finished the game with a double-double. Okenwa had 11 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Allysha Thomas also continued to be a force on the glass, securing 10 boards. 
 
As for the Bears, their leading scorer was Destiny Hunt. She finished the game with 23 points nine rebounds, and two steals. Kristen Donovan was behind her with 20 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and three steals. Mercedes Perez ended the game with 17 points, two boards, four assists and a steal. 
 
Comparing the two teams, the Panthers shot the ball just under 29 percent from the floor and under 16 percent from three-point range, hitting only three of 19 attempts. The Bears shot 38 percent from the floor and 25 percent from behind the arc cashing in on seven three-pointers. 
 
All in all, the Panthers were outmatched by the Bears. Old Westbury will regroup and turn the attention to the United States Merchant Marine Academy which will be their next test. The Panthers will travel to Kings Point on Wednesday, January 24 for a Skyline Conference battle at 7pm.
