Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday Night

KINGS POINT, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was unsuccessful against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners on Wednesday night. The Mariners defeated the Panthers by a final score of 80-31.

The Panthers were playing from behind for just about the entire game. OW could not figure out how to overcome USMMA in this one.

The game got going with USMMA scoring first. Phalan Smith hit the first basket of the night for the Panthers. Tyela Davidson connected on two jumpers and a free-throw later on in the quarter to give the Panthers their seventh point of the quarter. The Mariners exited the first quarter ahead by eight points.

As the second quarter got going, the Mariners were ahead, 15-7. USMMA opened up their lead significantly in the second quarter of play. The Mariners shot the ball very effectively, shooting just over 51 percent from the floor. In the second quarter, Allysha Thomas scored her first points of the night with just under six minutes to go in the first half. The Mariners were ahead at the half by a score of 41-17.

The second half featured a lot of the same, with USMMA moving and scoring the ball with ease. The Mariners continued to pile on the points and held the Panthers to only eight points in the third quarter. The Mariners entered the fourth quarter out in front by  34 points.

USMMA played strong defense in the fourth quarter and held the Panthers to only six points. The Panthers points came from Davidson and Smith, two of the main contributors on the night. The Mariners walked away with the win over the Panthers with a final score of 80-31.

Despite their defeat, the Panthers still had some strong individual performances. Tyela Davidson was the team's leading scorer. Davidson scored 11 points and had a steal on the defensive side of things. Phalan Smith finished the game with eight points, seven rebounds and a steal. Tamyia Jordan was the team's leading rebounder, finishing the night with eight boards.

The Mariners' leading scorer was Emily Grasseler, finishing the night with a double-double. Grasseler recorded 17 points, 11 rebounds, and an assist. Buchanan-Cummings also had an impressive showing putting up 16 points, and seven rebounds. Kaira Winston finished the game with nine points, three rebounds and six assists.

When comparing the two team's shooting percentages, the Mariners shot far more effectively than the Panthers. Throughout the game, the Mariners shot the ball just under 49 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from behind-the-arc, and 63 percent from the free-throw line. Old Westbury shot the ball 27 percent from the floor, and 11 percent from the free-throw line. The Panthers did not convert a three-point shot and went 0-8 from downtown.

One stat worth nothing is each team's points off turnovers. The Panthers committed 19 turnovers, allowing the Mariners to score 22 points. On the other hand, the Mariners had 14 turnovers, but the Panthers were only able to score six points from those errors.

All in all, the Panthers struggled in this Skyline Conference matchup. The team will practice and prepare as they are set to host Manhattanville College on Saturday, January 27 at 12pm in the Clark Center Gymnasium for another Skyline Conference battle.
