Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Defeated by Farmingdale on Tuesday Night

FARMINGDALE, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was taken down by the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Tuesday night with a final score of 60-35.

The Panthers struggles against Skyline Conference opponents continue as the team could not find a way to get going offensively against the Rams.

The Rams got things started, quickly scoring six unanswered points. The Panthers' first basket came three minutes into the game after Phalan Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a layup. From there, the Panthers managed to split a couple of attempts from the free-throw line. The Rams exited the first quarter with the lead and a score of 20-8.

In the second quarter, the Panthers scored their lowest number of points, cashing in on just seven points. The Panther points came from a jumper from Smith, and a layup in the paint from Allysha Thomas. The Panthers also hit a couple of free-throws. The Rams combined for 12 points in the quarter and shot the ball in the paint very well. At the half, the Rams were up 32-15.

The second half featured much of the same. The Panthers could not score the ball and struggled as a team on the offensive end. The Rams continued to push their offense and pile on the points, growing their lead.

Moving into the fourth quarter, the Rams were just as explosive and would defeat the Panthers by a final score of 60-35.

Phalan Smith was the Panthers' leading scorer. Smith finished the game with 12 points, and a personal season high 15 rebounds (nine offensive and six defensive). Tyela Davidson scored 10 points, and had eight rebounds, and four steals. Allysha Thomas grabbed five rebounds while also scoring four points.

As a group, the Panthers shot the ball 15 percent from the floor throughout the game. OW did not hit a single three-pointer and went 0-11 from deep.

The Rams were led in scoring by Layla Mendoza. She recorded 17 points, six rebounds and three blocks on the night. Gemma Pohalski scored nine points and had nine rebounds and four steals. Taneece Wooden finished the game with eight points and eight boards.

Despite their loss, the Panthers will look ahead towards their next Skyline Conference matchup. The Panthers will welcome the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, February 3 at 12pm in the Clark Center.
