Women's Basketball Overwhelmed by Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was taken down by the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 62-43.

The big difference maker in this one for the Panthers was their ball handling errors. As a team, the Panthers committed 27 turnovers, allowing the Gryphons to score 24 points off turnovers. On top of the turnovers, the Panthers struggled on the offensive side and failed to connect on several good looks throughout the first half.

The game got off to a tough start for the Panthers as the team was only able to connect on one field goal in the first quarter. The Gryphons scored the first seven points unanswered until Phalan Smith hit a mid-range jumper for OW. The rest of the quarter would go in favor of the Gryphons as they managed to build their lead up to 15 points.

The Panthers would hit their first shot of the second quarter a little over three-minutes in. Smith connected on a shot from behind-the-arc. On the Panthers ensuing possession, Tyela Davidson hit her first shot of the night which was a three-pointer from the corner. While the Panthers continued to make positive efforts, the scoring by the Gryphons continued to mount. After a mix of empty possessions and turnovers, the Panthers went into halftime trailing to the Gryphons, 32-14.

In the third quarter, the Panthers offense struggled like the first quarter, with OW only hitting a field goal and a single free-throw. The Panthers third quarter field goal came from Smith who connected on a driving layup.

During the final period of play, as the Gryphons' reserves checked into the game, the Panthers offense flourished. OW outscored Sarah Lawrence 26-12 in the final period of play.  As a team, Old Westbury shot the ball 30 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. In the end, the Gryphons defeated the Panthers by a comfortable margin and a final score of 62-43.

For the Panthers, the leading scorer was Phalan Smith who recorded a double-double. Smith finished the game with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, four blocks and two steals. Smith had a solid game on both sides of the floor and put a bulk of the efforts on her shoulders. Another top contributor for the Panthers was Kasiobi Okenwa. Throughout the game, Okenwa played strong defense from downlow. Okenwa finished the game with a double-double herself including 12 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and two steals. Tyela Davidson scored 12 points and recorded seven rebounds, and four steals.

As for the Gryphons, Khailand Anderson-Strawder had an explosive day. Anderson-Strawder finished the game with 26 points, 11 rebounds, a block and a steal.
