Women's Volleyball Struggles to Comeback in Fifth Set Against Purchase on Wednesday Night

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team lost to the Purchase College Panthers 3-2 on Wednesday night. It was a close match throughout the night with the momentum swinging back-and-forth. 
 
OW's overall record now sits at 3-8, and their conference record has fallen to 1-3.
 
The first set was won by Old Westbury in dominant fashion by a final score of 25-10. It was a set of runs as Old Westbury went on a big run from a 5-2 lead to a large 15-4 lead early on. The charge was led by Stephanie Velez, who had three kills in the set. Old Westbury would only commit one attacking error versus ten committed by Purchase. 
 
Purchase would return the favor in the second set taking it by a score of 25-21. Purchase got out to an early 5-0 start and would never trail the rest of the way. Old Westbury would cut the lead to 22-21, but Purchase won the final four points to secure the set.
 
Set three was a close battle that again went the way of Purchase by a score of 25-22. Old Westbury would get out to a quick 9-4 lead in the set, but after a Purchase timeout to slow the momentum, the Panthers of Purchase would slowly come back and eventually take a 16-15 lead. Old Westbury committed ten attacking errors in the set as Purchase closed out to win the set.
 
Old Westbury bounced back in set four winning by a score of 25-15. After an early Purchase lead, Old Westbury would go on a ten-point unanswered run from down 4-6 to up 14-6. Old Westbury wouldn't look back, finishing off the set with the help of seven service aces throughout the set.
 
The final set was won by Purchase with a score of 15-13. Ultimately it was a slow start in the 5th set for Old Westbury which doomed the Panthers. Purchase got out to an early 8-1 start to the set. Old Westbury would provide a furious comeback tying the set at 13-13, but Purchase took the next two points to secure the match.
 
It was a balanced team effort for Old Westbury with six players recording both kills and service aces. Stephanie Maser and Stephanie Velez led the way with 11 kills and 10 kills respectively. It was also a strong match for Jonangeliz Alvarez Rodriguez who totaled 16 digs.
 
Up next for Old Westbury is a non-conference home matchup against Medgar Evers College tomorrow night. The Panthers are riding a seven-match win streak versus the Cougars dating all the way back to 2015. Tomorrow night, October 10 will be the Panthers' annual 'Dig Pink' match. The action is scheduled to begin at 7 PM in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
