Men’s Basketball Victorious Over Hunter in Overtime Battle at Home Opener on Saturday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team emerged victorious in overtime over the Hawks of Hunter College on Saturday.  The final score was 72-69 in favor of the Panthers. 
 
The Panthers' offense found its groove as the first half got going. Several players combined to give the team their first points. The Panthers found themselves with one of their largest leads of the first half with just over four minutes to play as Jaden Flemming connected on a strong layup in the paint to put the Panthers up 30-24. 
 
Hunter fought back as they cashed in on a key three-pointer and free-throw to close the gap to just two points. Old Westbury held on and went into halftime with a 30-28 lead.
 
In the second half, the Hawks offense was consistent as they scored six unanswered points to go up by four to start the second half and take a 34-30 lead over OW until Amadi Lee-Kane responded with a big-time three-pointer to make it a one-point game. 
 
Hunter took another large lead, this time with only about eight minutes to play as they found themselves up 56-49 over the Panthers. 
 
With four minutes remaining in regulation, Hunter held a 10-point lead over OW as the Hawks' connected from behind-the-arc. 
 
The Panthers worked to close the gap thanks to another big three from Lee-Kane, and a bunch of key free-throws. 
 
Hunter scored with 1:23 left on the clock in regulation to go ahead by one point. It was Flemming, for the Panthers, who went 1-2 from the line to tie the game. The two sides were tied at 65-65 as the game headed to overtime. 
 
In the additional period, the Panthers found themselves down by two possessions once again, this time with just 2:30 remaining. 
 
A layup from Flemming cut the gap to just two and after a Hawks' miss, the Panthers took the lead off a major three-pointer from Kellen Leake
 
The Hawks were unable to respond on a failed offensive possession and the Panthers' added insurance points thanks to a pair of free-throws. 
 
The Panthers held on to win by a final score of 72-69 over the Hawks. 
 
Jaden Flemming led the Panthers in scoring as he recorded a double-double and finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists. Amadi Lee-Kane played well and also recorded a double-double. Lee-Kane had 18 points, 13 boards, four assists and a steal. Lee-Kane connected on two three-pointers. 
 
Joel Oforio and Kellen Leake each dropped 11 points in their first game in front of the Old Westbury fans. Oforio also had 11 rebounds and four blocks.
 
The Panthers shot the ball 31 percent from the floor, 11 percent from behind-the-arc and 64 percent from the free-throw line as a team throughout the game. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will hit the road and face off against Baruch College in another non-conference matchup. The game will take place on Wednesday, November 12 at 7:30 PM.
