The game got going with a strong defensive play from Kasiobi Okenwa as she blocked the Mariners opening shot. Allysha Thomas would go down and scoring a layup on the following Panther possession. The Panthers remained out in front for several minutes, but the Mariners brought things back to even with 3:10 to go in the first quarter.
The Mariners took control of the lead, and went ahead by three off an old-fashioned three-point play. Phalan Smith and Okenwa hit layups to close out the quarter and the Mariners and Panthers were tied going into the second quarter.
