Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Opens the Season with Losses to John Jay and SUNY Poly in the First Tri-Match of the Campaign

OLD WESTBURY, NY - The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team kicked of the 2024 season with a home tri-match on Saturday. The Panthers were defeated in both matches in three sets by the Wildcats of SUNY Poly and the Bloodhounds of John Jay College.

Match One: SUNY Old Westbury (0) vs SUNY Poly (3)

The first four Panther points of the day came from errors made by SUNY Poly. From there, Kyle Singh-Gajadar, recorded the first kill of the season off an assist from Kosta Anagnostou. Both sides rallied back and forth but it would be the Wildcats in control for almost the entire first set. The Wildcats won the first set by a final score of 25-14.

In the second set, the Panthers made several errors throughout the set that drew them back, giving the Wildcats the advantage. The Wildcats finished the second set with 11 kills compared the OW's five kills. The Wildcats would win the second set, again by 25-14.

The matches final set was the Panthers' highest scoring set of the match. The Panthers put up 17 points, but the Wildcats continued their powerful run that consisted of nine kills, while forcing five Panther errors.

Throughout the match, Anthony Moyett played well, finishing with eight digs, five kills, and five points. Another strong finished for the Panthers was Kyle Singh-Gajadar who recorded four kills, five set assists and three digs. Kosta Anagnostou led the team in set assists with seven and also had three service aces.

Match Three: SUNY Old Westbury (0) vs John Jay College (3)

The Panthers were able to fix some of their troubles from the first set, scoring some more points in the day's second match. The Bloodhounds played more effectively and made sure to avoid unnecessary errors. The Bloodhounds took the first set by a final score of 25-19.

The second set of this match was the most exciting of the day for Old Westbury. The Panthers scored their most points and put together a multi-point scoring run in the end. Unfortunately, the Bloodhounds prevailed and closed out set number two. The Bloodhounds defeated the Panthers 25-19 in the second set.

John Jay outperformed the Panthers throughout the third set. As a result of several reserves entering the game, the Panthers were able to string together some nice points and plays but the Bloodhounds came out on top. The Bloodhounds defeated the Panthers in the final set 25-16.

Some top OW finishers in the second set included Anthony Moyett who led the team in kills with six and digs with nine. Kosta Anagnostou finished the match with two blocks. The first-time libero, Jose Lorenzo Santos finished the match with one kill and four digs.

All in all, it was a strong first showing for the Panthers as they faced some of the first official opponents in program history. The team will next play on Saturday, Feb. 24. Old Westbury will host another tri-match, this time featuring Brooklyn College and the Pratt Institute.
