Women's Basketball Overcome by Purchase College in the Final Moments on Tuesday Night

PURCHASE, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team lost in a close one to the Panthers of Purchase College on Tuesday night by a final score of 51-48. 
 
The two sides went back-and0forth for the entirety of the game, but in the end, the Panthers of Purchase College pulled away, forcing the season split between the two programs. 
 
The game got going with a strong first quarter for both sides. Phalan Smith scored the game's first basket on a mid-range jumper. Tyela Davidson could not be stopped from behind-the-arc as she connected three three-point shots to help OW bring things even throughout the quarter. Going into the second quarter, the Panthers were even at 13 a piece. 


Both teams traded sides throughout the quarter. Old Westbury continued to shoot the ball well from deep. Tamiya Jordan hit her first-three pointer of the night and Davidson cashed in on another one. Old Westbury went into the half down by one with a score of 25-26 in favor of Purchase. 
 
The lead changed hands four times in the third quarter. Both sides went back-and-forth in scoring. After trading baskets for several minutes both sides remained gridlocked and entered the final quarter even at 36-36. 
 
The fourth quarter was filled with excitement for both sides. There were several lead changes as both sides tried to pull away. With five minutes to play, Purchase found themselves ahead by six points. 
 
Phalan Smith hit a jumper in the paint on a fast break and Sierra Rowe then hit a three-pointer on the following possession to make it a one possession game as Purchase led by three. The final minute of play provided much excitement for both sides. 
 
Purchase connected on several attempts from the free-throw line as a result of OW fouling to stop the clock. They led by six points with seven seconds to go.  With just under five seconds, Rowe drained another three-pointer to bring the game back to within three points. Old Westbury could not get another stop and ran out of time. The Panthers of Purchase defeated the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury by a final score of 51-48. 
 
Although unsuccessful in the end, Old Westbury had several key contributors. Phalan Smith finished the game with impressive stats on both sides of the ball. Smith earned another double-double featuring 12 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and seven steals. Tyela Davidson recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Kasiobi Okenwa also recorded a double-double on the night as she finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and a steal. 
 
As a team, Old Westbury shot the ball 25 percent from the floor, 23 percent from behind-the-arc, and 38 percent from the free-throw line. OW only had 18 turnovers compared to Purchase's 23 turnovers. 
 
Purchase's leading scorer was Carlye Graff who finished the night with 12 points, four rebounds, and a block. Kaylena Phagnassay recoded a double-double including 11 points, 11 boards, and two steals. Jessica McHugh also had a strong night, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. 
 
On the night, Purchase shot the ball 29 percent from the floor, 32 percent from three-point range and 61 percent from the free-throw line. 
 
Despite the tough loss to the Panthers of Purchase, Old Westbury will look to bounce back in their next Skyline Conference matchup. The Panthers will play host to Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday, February 10. That game will tip-off at 1pm in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
