Softball Falls to Farmingdale In the Opening Game of the Double Elimination Tournament; Panthers Set to Take On St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Friday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was defeated in their first game in the Skyline Conference double elimination tournament against the Rams of Farmingdale State College. The final score was 8-0 in five innings of play.

The Panthers will square off against the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn, tomorrow, May 10 at 3:30 PM. The loser of that game will be eliminated while the winner will advance to take on the loser of Farmingdale and Manhattanville's matchup taking place earlier in the day.

SUNY Old Westbury (0) – Farmingdale (8) [Five Innings]

The Panthers got things going in the top of the first, getting runners in scoring position early. Ashley Pierce walked to draw the Panthers first base runner. On the next at-bat, Madison Danin connected on a deep single to center field to advance Pierce to third. Unfortunately, the runners were left stranded as FSC escaped the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Old Westbury recorded their second and only other hit of the game. The hit came courtesy of Angelina Fernandez who singled to center field. The next two batters were out as a result of FSC strikeouts leaving yet another OW base runner stranded.

The bottom of the second inning was a struggle for the Panthers as the Rams were able to score six runs on five hits. There was a pair of Panthers' errors that helped move the Rams' base runners along the base path.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Panthers made a pitching change, moving Taylor Murphy from left field to the circle to pitch. Unfortunately, the Rams would find four more hits allowing them to score two more runs and take an 8-0 lead.

Throughout the rest of the game, the Panthers would have only one more base runner, Danin who reached on an error. The Panthers offense was unable to produce a run to prevent the run rule from ending the game early. The Rams held on to defeat the Panthers 8-0 in five innings.

Madison Danin and Angelina Fernandez each went 1-2 at the dish combining for the only two Panthers' hits of the day. The Panthers drew one walk, courtesy of Ashley Pierce.

Layla Ramos got the start in the circle. Ramos allowed five hits and two earned runs. In relief, Taylor Murphy faced 10 batters and allowed four hits and two runs. Murphy struck out one batter.

Next up, the Panthers will take on the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn in a win or go home battle on Friday, May 9 at 3:30 PM. With a victory over the Bears, the Panthers would play again on Friday at 6:00 PM against the loser of the earlier game. Tickets are required at each Skyline Conference playoff game.
