Men's Basketball Falls Short to Maritime in Final Moments on Wednesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The SUNY Old Westbury Panthers men's basketball team lost to the Maritime College Privateers 68-65 on Wednesday night, dropping the Panthers to 6-7 overall on the season.

To start the game, neither team was able to gain the advantage with both teams posting strong defensive play with the Panthers leading 12-11 just under 10 minutes into the half. Then the offense started to pick up with both teams more than doubling their score leading to the Privateers taking the lead 28-27 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

At the end of the half the Panthers led the Privateers 34-30. In what was a back and forth half the Panthers shot 13 for 29 from field goal range and three for eight from beyond the arc. Jamari Williams led the Panthers with 11 points, shooting two for two from three-point range and four for seven from the floor.

The Panthers started the second half right where they left off with four straight points to complete their 8-0 run going back to the first half. However, the Pioneers followed that up with a run of their own, outscoring the Panthers 18-3 to take the lead 53-45 about nine minutes into the second half.

In the final minute of the game Chris Smith tied the game 65-65 for the Panthers. However, Jake Devaney of the Privateers drained a three-pointer with only 5.3 seconds left on the clock to call the game for Maritime College 68-65.

Amadi Lee-Kane led the Panthers with 17 points followed by Williams with 15 points. As a team the Panthers shot 25 for 57 from field goal range and four for 17 from beyond the arc.

Old Westbury is in action again on Saturday at 7 PM on the road against Manhattanville University.
