Men’s Basketball Taken Down by USMMA in First Matchup of the New Year

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was defeated by the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 66-39 in favor of USMMA.
 
The Panthers now sit at 5-5 and fall to 0-2 in conference play,
 
Old Westbury struggled to shoot the ball effectively throughout the day. Despite this, the game got off to a fairly even start. USMMA found themselves up 6-0 just about three minutes into the game. After Michael Obi cashed in on a three-pointer and Jamari Williams scored a fast-break layup, the Panthers trailed by only one.
 
For about three minutes, neither team would score until Obi scored in the paint for the Panthers to give them the lead. From there, the two sides went back and forth for a few possessions.
 
USMMA found their significant lead in the first half with just about 6:30 remaining after a three-pointer to give them a five-point advantage.
 
The Panthers offense hit a lull and USMMA continued to grow their lead. At halftime, USMMA led OW, 27-14.
 
In the second half, the Panthers continued to struggle in their shooting in all areas of the floor. The Mariners lead continued to grow as they compiled several points off of fast breaks.
 
USMMA's largest lead of the game came with just under five-minutes remaining in the game as they had a 30-point advantage.
 
The Panthers managed to close the gap just slightly but ultimately fell to the Mariners by a final score of 66-39.
 
As a team, the Panthers shot the ball 26 percent from the floor, 11 percent from behind-the-arc, and 38 percent from the free-throw line throughout the day.
 
Amadi Lee-Kane led the team in scoring and finished with 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Michael Obi had a strong game in the starting lineup. Obi recorded 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Jamari Williams recorded six points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
Next up, the Panthers will hit the road and continue Skyline Conference play. The Panthers will travel to take on the Bears of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Wednesday, January 8. That game will tip-off at 7:30 PM.
