Men’s Volleyball Takes Down York in Five Set Thriller on Thursday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team defeated the Cardinals of York college on Thursday night, 3-2. The Panthers secured their first victory of the 2025 campaign.

Old Westbury advances to 1-5 on the year and remains 0-1 in conference play.

The first match got off to an exciting start as it was neck and neck throughout the set. The Panthers found themselves down 22-20 but managed to close the gap. Both sides were even at 26-26 but two Cardinals' kills gave them the first set victory, 28-26.

Old Westbury responded in the second set. The Panthers came out of the gates with an improved attack but still struggled to defend York's pressures. OW made a push late in the second set to steal the lead from York. The Panthers saw two kills by Damien Villamil for their final two kills to give them the victory.

The third set saw 14 kills from the Panthers in an offensive showdown. Neither team found a strong control of a lead, going back and forth throughout the set. The Panthers managed to take the third/high scoring set, 31-29.

York had an answer in the fourth set as they held the Panthers to 20 points. Despite leading the set in kills 11 to nine, the Panthers fell short in the fourth set, 25-20.

The fifth and deciding set was just as exciting. At the mid-point of the fifth set, the Panthers led 8-6. The final two Panther points came thanks to a kill by Torrence Fredericks and a Liam Eisel service ace.

Old Westbury took the final set, 15-10 and won the match 3-2.

Torrence Fredericks led the team in kills as he finished the night with 18 kills and four blocks. Daniel Feliz also had a strong night on the attack. Feliz finished with 12 kills.

Damien Villamil recorded 11 kills, two service aces and 10 digs. Ashel Santos and Liam Eisel had four aces and 28 assists and two service aces with 27 assists, respectively.
