Baseball Victorious in High Scoring Battle Against NJCU on Tuesday Afternoon

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was victorious on Tuesday night in a non-conference battle against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. The final score was 17-14 in favor of the Panthers. 
 
Old Westbury improves to 8-5 on the season. 
 
The Panthers struck first in the top of the first inning, putting up three runs courtesy of hits from Donny Whalen and Nick Giovanakis
 
 NJCU responded with a run of their own to make it a 3-1 game. 
 
The Gothic Knights would tie the game in the bottom of the third inning with a two RBI double.
 
The fifth inning was big for both sides as OW tacked on three more runs and NJCU responded with one. 
 
In the top of the sixth inning, after an RBI double from RJ Azarieh, Mike Petrucelly blasted a home run out of the park for two RBIs. 
 
After the sixth inning, Old Westbury held an 11-4 lead. 
 
NJCU would put up two runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to cut the Panthers' lead to just three runs. 
 
Thankfully, Old Westbury saw an offensive explosion in the ninth with six runs. Despite this, the Panthers allowed the Gothic Knights to respond with six runs of their own in the bottom of the night. Anthony Ponzo managed to close out the game and recorded the save. The Panthers would take the game by a final score of 17-14. 
 
Jacob Taormina went 3-5 from the dish with two RBIs. RJ Azarieh had another strong performance as he finished with four hits, four RBIs, three runs and two doubles. Mike Petrucelly also had a strong outing as he finished with two hits, two RBIs, a homer and a walk. Ricky Fassita finished the game with three hits, a double and a stolen base. Nick Giovanakis went 1-4 at the plate with two RBIs. 
 
Louis Pizzileo carried the pitching duties as he threw four innings and allowed five hits and three runs. Pizzileo struck out two batters. Jonathan Kortright got the win as he threw 2.1 innings of relief, striking out two batters and allowing three runs. 
 
Anthony Ponzo would come in and face three batters, allowing two hits and no runs. Ponzo earned his first save of the season. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, March 26 as the team will host Vassar College. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 PM from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
