Baseball Splits Doubleheader With John Jay on Friday Afternoon

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team split their non-conference doubleheader against the Bloodhounds of John Jay College. The final scores were 8-6 and 6-3, respectively. 
 
The Panthers now move to 3-1 on the year. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (8)- John Jay (6)
 
The first game of the afternoon got going favorably for the Panthers as they scored their first run in the top of the first frame. The run came courtesy of the reigning Skyline Conference Co-Player of the week, Mike Petrucelly who it a sacrifice fly to centerfield that would score Jacob Taormina
 
The Panthers held their 1-0 lead thanks to strong starting pitching from Kyle Cavataio who ended up going 4.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one run. 
 
John Jay made it a tie game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a one run homer to left field. 
 
The Panthers would tack on four more runs in the top of the fifth to grow their lead to 5-1. The OW runs came thanks to a solo home run from RJ Azarieh, a single from nick Giovanakis that scored JJ Palumbo and Mike Petrucelly as well as a triple from Dominic Felicetti that allowed Giovanakis to score. 
 
Five runs in the bottom of the sixth would give the Bloodhounds a one run advantage going into the top of the seventh. 
 
With their backs against the wall, the Panthers managed to find a run courtesy of Azarieh who singled to left field to score Taormina. 
 
With the game tied, and in extra innings, the Panthers found two more runs thanks to a pinch-hit single from Nick Miller and a sacrifice fly from Taormina which allowed Donny Whalen and Giovanakis to score. 
 
Joe Lubrano came up huge again as he allowed just one hit and no runs in the final two innings. The Panthers would hold on and take the opening game by a final score of 8-6. 
 
RJ Azarieh had a strong game as he went 3-5 from the dish with two RBIs, a double and a home run. Nick Giovanakis also shined at the plate as he recorded three hits in four at-bats. Giovanakis had an RBI, a double and a walk. Dominic Felicetti hit a triple that also gave him an RBI. 
 
Kyle Cavataio got the start on the mount in game one. Cavataio went 4.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one run. Cavataio recorded six strikeouts and faced 18 batters. Joseph Lubrano recorded the win and allowed no runs and one hit against eight batters. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (3) – John Jay (6)
 
The second game of the day got started favorably for the Panthers once again as Azarieh scored on a wild pitch. 
 
In the second inning, John Jay responded right away with a run of their own on an OW error. 
 
Palumbo hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning that allowed Taormina to score. 
 
The Bloodhounds had a big fifth inning that opened up their lead. The Bloodhounds scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 6-2.
 
The Panthers tacked on one more run courtesy of a Petrucelly sacrifice fly to score Taormina but it was to no avail. John Jay would hold on and win the second game of the day, 6-3.
 
Ricky Fassita, Jacob Taormina, RJ Azarieh, and Angelo Velez each recorded a hit. Taormina scored two runs. 
 
Anthony Ponzo got the start and threw four innings where he allowed three runs and two earned runs. Ponzo allowed four walks. Jonathan Kortright threw 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit white striking out one batter. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will return to action tomorrow, for a non-conference doubleheader against Lehman College. The first game will get going at 12 PM and will be played at Lasorda Legacy Park in Yaphank, N.Y.
