SUNY Old Westbury Athletics to Launch Women’s Flag Football in the Fall of 2025

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury Athletics and Recreation department has announced the addition of the Women's Flag Football program beginning in August of 2025.

The Panthers now become one of six Skyline Conference institution to add the rapidly growing sport.

Women's Flag Football will begin as a club sport and then officially transition to a varsity program in the Spring of 2026.

Flag football is played on an 80x40 yard field and features four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes. Teams generally have around 25 players, though there are no current official roster caps, and the games are played in a seven-on-seven format. Flag football, for both men and women, has been recognized as an Olympic sport by the International Olympic Committee and will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

A search for the program's inaugural head coach is expected to take place in late May with an announcement coming sometime over the summer.

Those interested or with questions should reach out to Lenore Walsh, Athletic Director (walshle@oldwestbury.edu) with your information.
