Softball Sweeps Hunter in Non-Conference Showdown on Tuesday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team swept the Hawks of Hunter College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The final scores were 8-0 and 10-4, respectively.
 
Old Westbury now improves to 5-9 overall on the season.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (8) – Hunter (0) [Five Innings]
 
The Panthers got things going in the second inning when Madison Muehling blasted a solo homer over the left field fence.
 
Holding a 1-0 lead, the Panthers escaped Hunter's two hits in the top of the third inning, leaving three Hawks' runners on base.
 
The Panthers poured on the runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ashley Pierce doubled to left field allowing Stella Apuzzi (who pinch ran) to score. Madison Muehling hit an RBI single to make the score 3-0. Alaina Reilly then hit a three RBI double to left center field to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.
 
Holding a comfortable lead, the Panthers' defense held strong in the top of the fifth.
 
Amanda Varela would single in the bottom of the fifth, allowing two runs to score, making it an 8-0 ball game after five innings. The Panthers walked away with the 8-0 run-rule victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.
 
Madison Muehling dominated as she went 2-2 at the dish with two RBIs, two runs and a walk. Muehling also recorded a home run. Amanda Varela went 3-3 at the dish and finished the game with two RBIs and a run. Olivia Toto, Phylicia Cangemi, Alaina Reilly, Ashley Pierce and Madison Danin all recorded hits throughout the game.

In the circle, Layla Ramos tossed a complete game shutout. Ramos allowed five hits while striking out five batters. Ramos did not allow any walks.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (10) – Hunter (4)
 
The Panthers got the scoring going right away in their first half inning of offense. Old Westbury would put up three runs in the bottom of the first. The runs came courtesy of an RBI single by Pierce and a two RBI single from Muehling.
 
Hunter responded right away as they scored a run in the top of the second inning on a single to center field. The runner would be able to score on an OW error.
 
Holding a 3-1 lead, Old Westbury drove in another run from Varela who was able to score on a throwing error by Hunter.
 
The Hawks scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 4-4 game.

Old Westbury answered right back with a huge rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Panthers scored on a Varela bunt, an RBI single by Hillary Bennett and an RBI single from Danin. The Panthers would also score as two runners reached on Hawks' errors.
 
Holding a 10-4 lead, the Panthers were able to shut down the Hawks in the final two frames. Old Westbury would take the second game of the day by a final score of 10-4.
 
Madison Muehling continued her dominant day as she finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run. Zoe Rivera went 2-4 at the dish, scoring a run. Alaina Reilly recorded a hit and run. Madison Danin, Ashley Pierce, Amanda Varela and Hillary Bennett each recorded a hit and an RBI.
 
In the circle, Hailey Ragozine impressed as she threw the complete game. Ragozine allowed 10 hits and just three earned runs. Ragozine would strike out three batters.
 
Next up, the Panthers will return to action tomorrow, April 9. The Panthers will play host to the Cardinals of York College at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The first game is scheduled for 5 PM.
