Softball Advances After Taking Down #4 Mount Saint Mary; Falls Just Short to #1 Manhattanville to Close the 2025 Campaign

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team defeated the #4 Knights of Mount Saint Mary by a score of 6-2 to advance in the double elimination tournament but fell short to the #1 Valiants of Manhattanville University, 3-5.
 
Game One- #3 SUNY Old Westbury (6) – #4 Mount Saint Mary (2)
 
The Panthers got going right away in the top of the first inning thanks to Madison Danin's two RBI single to center field that allowed Alaina Reilly and Zoe Rivera to score.
 
Old Westbury saw strong pitching and defense through the next few innings.
 
The Panthers tacked on another run in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Layla Ramos to center field that scored Hillary Bennett (who pinch ran).
 
Trailing 3-0, the Knights would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI single to right field.
 
Old Westbury would add an insurance run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI from Rivera that scored Juliana Vasquez.
 
The Panthers scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Reilly hit a two RBI single up the middle to score Madison Muehling and Vasquez.
 
As a team, Old Westbury recorded 12 hits. Madison Muehling went 2-4 at the dish with a run. Zoe Rivera recorded a hit, an RBI and a run. Alaina Reilly dominated as she went 3-4 with two RBIs and a run. Juliana Vasquez finished with two hits and two runs. Layla Ramos, Ashleigh Stewart, Madison Danin and Ashley Pierce each recorded hits.
 
Layla Ramos was dominant from the circle. She threw the complete game where she allowed just four hits and two runs. Ramos struck out 11 batters.

Game Two- #3 SUNY Old Westbury (3) - #1 Manhattanville University (5)
 
The Panthers looked impressive in their second game of the day.
 
The Valiants scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on a dropped fly ball, allowing the runner on third to score.
 
Trailing 1-0, the Panthers responded with a big fifth inning. OW combined for five hits to score three runs. Amanda Varela led off with a single to center field. Madison Muehling would single to the short stop. Zoe Rivera came up with a big RBI single to left field.
 
Alaina Reilly would hit a big two RBI single up the middle. Following that, Danin single up the middle. The Panthers left the inning with a 3-1 lead.
 
Despite the strong pitching from the Panthers, the Valiants took advantage of an early walk in the top of the sixth and tied the game with at 3-3.
 
Old Westbury was unable to capitalize in the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Valiants added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh as the Panthers showed fatigue.
 
Trailing 5-3, the Panthers were unable to complete the comeback and would fall to the Valiants in their third game of the double elimination tournament of the Skyline Conference Softball Championship.
 
The Panthers combined for seven hits. Madison Muehling went 2-4 with a run. Zoe Rivera also recorded two hits with an RBI and a run. Alaina Reilly came up with a hit and two RBIs. Madison Danin and Amanda Varela each recorded a hit.
 
Layla Ramos threw a great game once again. Ramos threw 6.1 innings where she allowed seven hits and four earned runs. Ramos struck out four batters. Hailey Ragozine made a relief appearance where she allowed just one hit and struck a batter out.
 
Old Westbury finishes the 2025 campaign having taken down #6 Mount Saint Vincent, and #4 Mount Saint Mary. The Panthers fell short in hard fought battles to the #2 Rams of Farmingdale State and the #1 Valiants of Manhattanville University.


The Panthers earned a regular season record of 22-16 and an overall record of 24-18. Old
Westbury went 12-6 in regular season conference play.
