Softball Clinches Skyline Post Season Berth with Sweep Over Mount Saint Vincent on Senior Day

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was victorious on Saturday on senior day. The Panthers swept the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 4-3 and 4-0, respectively. 
 
The Panthers conclude the regular season with an overall record of 22-16 and a Skyline Conference record of 12-6. 
 
With today's sweep, Old Westbury officially clinches the three seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Softball Championship Tournament.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (4) – Mount Saint Vincent (3)
 
The game started as a pitchers' duel with both sides' pitchers throwing the ball well and strong defensive support. 
 
The Dolphins collected the game's first hit in the top of the second inning on a single up the middle. 
 
A two RBI double to right field gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. 
 
Old Westbury would not respond until Alaina Reilly came to bat with Madison Muehling and Zoe Rivera on base, each of whom reached on a hit. Reilly blasted a two RBI double to right field to tie the game. 
 
Later in the inning, Ashley Pierce would double to score Phylicia Cangemi (who pinch ran). The Panthers held a 3-2 lead at the close of the fifth inning. 
 
The Dolphins responded right away with a run to tie it in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single up the middle. 
 
With the game tied 3-3, Ashleigh Stewart scored the game's winning run after Amanda Varela bunted allowing Stewart to make a heads-up play at the plate. 
 
Old Westbury would hold on and close out the game, taking the opener, 4-3. 
 
Zoe Rivera went 2-4 at the dish with a run. Alaina Reilly finished the game with a hit and two RBIs. Ashley Pierce and Amanda Varela each recorded a hit and an RBI. Madison Muehling, Ashleigh Stewart and Juliana Vasquez each recorded hits. 
 
Layla Ramos looked sharp from the circle. Ramos tossed a complete game and allowed just five total runs (one earned run). Ramos struck out a total of three batters. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (4) – Mount Saint Vincent (0)
 
The Panthers scored all of their runs in the first inning and took advantage of a big opening inning, offensively. 
 
Ashley Pierce doubled to left field to score both Alaina Reilly and Zoe Rivera. Later in the inning, Amanda Varela reached on a throwing error that allowed Madison Danin and Pierce to score. 
 
Throughout the rest of the game, the Dolphins left several runners stranded on base thanks to strong defense and pitching by the Panthers.
 
Old Westbury would close out the game and defeated Mount Saint Vincent, 4-0. 
 
Ashley Pierce finished with two RBIs, a run and a hit. Alaina Reilly went 2-3 at the dish with a run. Hillary Bennett finished with a hit, going 1-2. Amanda Varela finished with two RBIs. 

Hailey Ragozine dominated in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout. Ragozine threw seven innings where she allowed just four hits. Ragozine struck out six UMSV batters. With this win, Ragozine finished the season with a total of 11 wins.
 
With the day's sweep, the Panthers officially clinched the third seed in the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament. The Panthers conclude the regular season with an overall record of 22-16 and a Skyline Conference record of 12-6. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will host the sixth seed in the Skyline Conference's single elimination game in the Softball Championship Tournament. The single elimination game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6. The start time will be announced when available.
