Panthers Early Lead Slip Away in Loss to CCNY

Old Westbury scores eight runs after jumping ahead 4-0, but Beavers rally for 11-8 win

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team dropped an 11-8 decision to The City College of New York on Wednesday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex after building an early four-run lead through the first three innings.

The Panthers struck first in the opening inning, taking a 2-0 lead. JT Torres scored on a wild pitch before Dean Pasolini drew an RBI walk that brought home JJ Palumbo.

Old Westbury added two more runs in the third inning to move in front 4-0. James Reilly singled to left field and drove in Mike Tiseo before Pasolini followed with an RBI groundout that scored Mike Petrucelly.

CCNY answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game, but the Panthers responded in the bottom half of the inning. Palumbo lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Torres, and Tiseo followed with a solo home run to right field to give Old Westbury a 6-4 lead.

The Beavers took control with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to go ahead 10-6. Old Westbury got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth when James Reilly scored on a wild pitch and Pasolini delivered an RBI single to center field that plated Chris Bartnik. CCNY added one final run in the seventh and held on for the 11-8 win.

Old Westbury's eight runs were scored by JT Torres (2), Mike Tiseo (2), JJ Palumbo, Mike Petrucelly, James Reilly and Chris Bartnik.

Dean Pasolini led the Panthers with three RBI. Reilly went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored, while Mike Tiseo finished 1-for-1 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. JJ Palumbo added one RBI and one run scored, and Mike Torres crossed the plate twice.

Two Things Old Westbury Did Right

Old Westbury made the most of its offensive chances early, building a 4-0 lead through three innings and finishing with eight runs despite recording six hits. The Panthers also showed patience at the plate, drawing 12 walks and continuing to battle back after CCNY took the lead.

What's Next?

Old Westbury will remain at home to face The City College of New York in a doubleheader at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
