WOMEN'S SOCCER POSTS SHUTOUT OVER YESHIVA FOR FIRST WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY, 5-0

SEPTEMBER 11, 2008

Boxscore

YONKERS, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team earned its first ever win in program history defeating Yeshiva University on Thursday evening at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, New York, 5-0.  Old Westbury evens up at 1-1 on the season in their inaugural season and is now in a three-way tie for first place with a conference record of 1-0 as Yeshiva fell to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Freshman Cassandra Esposito wasted no time to get the Panthers on the board as she scored her second goal of the season in the 17th minute.  Esposito settled a pass by Courtney Dixon and blasted the ball into the back of the net for the score to give Old Westbury a 1-0 advantage.  Dixon's assist was the first in the program history.  Old Westbury had a couple of good scoring opportunities in the half, but would settle for a 1-0 halftime lead as the defense held the Macabees at bay in the first half.

In the second half, the Panthers defensive attack continued to swarm Yeshiva, limiting them to two shots in the half. In the 60th minute, Esposito struck again to put the game away for Old Westbury as she scored on a breakaway beating the Macabee keeper to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.  Mikele Reitmayr followed with her first score in the 67th minute to put the Panthers up 3-0.  Esposito delivered her third goal of the game on a one-on-one move for the score in the 83rd minute to claim bragging rights for the first ever hatrick in program history.  Jessica Manning then asserted herself into the scoring mix by netting her first score of the season in the 84th minute to give the Panthers a commanding 5-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Deborah Ciccarelli led the Panthers defensively with one save to earn the first shutout in program history.  Old Westbury dominated Yeshiva throughout the match, out-shooting their opponents 31-4, keeping the Macabee defense on their heels.  Old Westbury finished with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks while Esposito fired a team high 10 shots in addition to Courtney Dixon registering nine and Jessica Manning and Melissa Romero adding four.

The Green and Ivory (1-1, 1-0) are back in action on September 13th at 1:00 p.m. for a home opener at Panther Park against Skyline Conference opponent, Mount Saint Mary College  Please visit www.oldwestburypanthers.com for more information on women's soccer or any of the other Panther athletic teams.
