MEN'S HOOPS DROP 88-77 DECISION AT MARITIME

THROGS NECK, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team were unable to clamp down on Maritime College's 68.4 percent shooting from the field in the second half as the Privateers defeated the Panthers 88-77 on Wednesday night at the Riesenberg Gymnasium.  The loss moves Old Westbury to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in league play while Maritime improves to 6-5 and 4-2.    

After trailing 40-36 at halftime, the Panthers got as close as two points on a jumper by sophomore Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) with 19:11 remaining.  Old Westbury was still within striking range at 47-41 just 3:21 into the second half before Maritime gradually began to pull away.  An 11-6 run over the next 3:40 built the hosts' advantage to 11 (58-47) and the Panthers were never able to close within nine points.

Juniors Bill Reese (Selma, AL) and Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.) paced Old Westbury in scoring with 19 points apiece.  George added a team-best two steals as classmate Shane DeNully (Bronx, N.Y.) had 13 points and seven assists.  Lester Prosper pulled down a team-best eight boards to go along with seven points while junior Patrick Bonna (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 points and five rebounds.    

Rahshawn Pringle led Maritime offensively with 22 points while Timothy Dougherty paced the Privateers in the rebound department with a game-high 10 boards to go with 17 points.  Quamel Lyerly followed with 12 points and nine rebounds as Joseph Bracaglia and Jermelle Fraser added 11 points apiece.  Andre Cooper chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.  

The very physical game featured 44 fouls between the two teams, resulting in 45 points from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury shot 78.3 percent (18-23) from the free throw line while Maritime went 27-of-39 (69.2 %).  Maritime did most of its damage in the paint, dominating Old Westbury 40-26 in the low post.  Maritime limited the Panthers to 34.7 percent shooting from the field, compared to the Privateers 54.9 percent.  The Privateers held the rebounding edge, grabbing 46 pull downs to Old Westbury's 34.
