MEN’S HOOPS TAKES CARE OF FARMINGDALE STATE, 60-56

Panthers overcame 14-point first half deficit as team returned back to their winning ways

FARMINGDALE, NY
(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team completed the regular season sweep of the Farmingdale State Rams with a 60-56 victory on the road at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center. Old Westbury improved to 16-6 on the season and 14-3 against the Skyline Conference. Farmingdale State their overall record to 10-11 and slipped to 10-6 in conference action. 

Farmingdale State led 20-8 on a layup by Andre Martin with 12:40 left in the first half. The Rams then extended their cushion to as much as 17 points (35-18) with 2:51 remaining. Farmingdale State took a 35-21 lead into the locker room, shooting 51.9 percent (14-of-27) while Old Westbury struggled, hitting 32.1 percent (9-of-28) 

Old Westbury stormed out of the locker room with a 20-5 run to jump ahead 41-40 on a three-pointer by Hakiem George with just under 14 minutes to play. Shane DeNully sank a jumper with 5:30 left to extend Old Westbury's lead to eight (53-45), capping off a 12-5 spurt. The Rams got no closer than two points as Old Westbury pulled out the hard fought victory on the road. 

Kristopher Afum led the Panthers with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point territory. Hakiem George added 11 points, canning 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to go with eight rebounds. Frantz Granjean contributed with 10 points (5-of-10 FG), six rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals in 30 minutes of action off the bench. 

Shahee Martine scored 19 points to pace the Rams while Wade Cress and Andre Martin followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Cress finished with four assists and two steaks while Alvin Dennis pulled down a team-high six rebounds. 

The Panthers ended the night shooting 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the field as Farmingdale State finished 44 percent (22-of-50). Old Westbury went 6-of-15 from three-point range and pulled down 35 rebounds on the game, and Farmingdale State went 10-of-26 from three-point land and grabbed 25 rebounds. Old Westbury cleaned 11 boards off the offensive glass and Farmingdale State had six. Those 11 offensive rebounds for Old Westbury were turned into 12 points. Old Westbury converted 11 turnovers into 17 points while Farmingdale State turned 13 Panther miscues into 17 points. Old Westbury held a 6-4 margin in steals and Farmingdale State finished with a 14-9 assist margin.
