Afum, George lead Panthers past Blue Knights

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUN Y College at Old Westbury men's basketball team earned a hard fought Skyline Conference victory with a 58-53 road win over the Mount Saint Mary Blue Knights on Saturday afternoon at the Kaplan Center. The win improved Old Westbury to 17-6 on the season and 15-3 in conference action while Mount Saint Mary dropped to 10-13 and 9-9, respectively. 

In a sloppy first half, Mount Saint Mary scored the first bucket and jumped out 10-2 at the 12:21 mark. Matt Weinberger pushed Mount Saint Mary up 10, their largest lead of the game with 11:49 remaining. Old Westbury used the final nine minutes to outscore the Blue Knights 18-10, and went into the locker room down one, 24-23. 

Both teams traded baskets for the first nine minutes of the second half until Bill Reese dropped in a layup for Old Westbury to grab their first lead of the game at the 10:54 mark, 35-34. Hakiem George knocked down a three-pointer with 3:03 remaining on the game clock to put Old Westbury up for good, 46-43. 

Hakiem George led the way for Old Westbury with 17 points, connecting on 6-of-13 from the field to go along with five rebounds, three steals and three assists in 33 minutes of court time. Kristopher Afum added 11 points and Bill Reese had 10. Lester Prosper chipped in with nine points, 10 rebounds, two swats and one steal while Jason Kondra went for seven points, six assists and four rebounds off the bench. 

Kevin Milella was one of four Blue Knights to score in double figures, hitting a game-high 19 points for Mount Saint Mary. Milella finished 7-of-8 from the floor with 10 boards and three steals. Carlos Valdez tallied 11 points and nine rebounds while Tim Morris and Matt Weinberger followed with 10 points each. 

Old Westbury shot 32.8 percent from the floor, including 26.1 percent from outside the arc and 76.9 percent from the line. Mount Saint Mary connected on 42.6 percent for the game, including 13.3 percent from three-point territory and 64.7 percent from the stripe. The Panthers were outrebounded, 37-35, but held a 12-9 advantage off the offensive glass. Those 12 offensive boards led to 19 second chance points compared to nine by Mount Saint Mary. Old Westbury held a 26-0 advantage in bench points and scored 17 points off 15 Blue Knight miscues.
