KINGS POINT, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury swimming programs kicked off the new year Thursday in a double-dual meet in Kings Point, New York, taking on the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners and York Cardinals at O'Hara Hall Pool. The men's squad knocked off York, 48-43, and were topped 66-35 by the Mariners. The women's side fell to USMMA, 69-28, and 59-33 to York.
On the men's side,
Michael Gavrilchin won the first of his two Thursday victories in the 50 freestyle. Gavrilchin touched the wall at 22.47 to beat USMMA's Frank Vita's time of 22.51. OW's
Cameron Russo followed in third at 24.66. Gavrilchin enjoyed success in the 100 backstroke as he finished ahead of the pack with a winning time of 55.34.
Stephan Paul grabbed the wall in 1:13.54 to set a season-best time in the 100 breaststroke, topping his 1:14.53 time against Purchase (Dec. 7, 2010).
Cameron Russo finished in second place in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.13, his second best time of the season.
Nicholous Perdomo captured second place in the 200 freestyle in 2:28.17 while
Morgan Miller clocked his season-best time of 2:39.59, shattering his previous time of 2:44.22 set against Mount Saint Mary (Nov. 20, 2010). The Panthers earned second place in the 200 freestyle relay when the quartet of
Cameron Russo, Stephan Paul,
Nicholous Perdomo and
Michael Gavrilchin finished with a time of 1:45.78.
Marissa Smith and
Christa Foerschner enjoyed positive results on the women's side, registering the lone individual second place finishes for OW on the day. Smith took second in the 200 freestyle in 3:34.58 while Foerschner clocked a 1:34.99 in the 100 butterfly.
Samantha Siegler swam to a third place finish at 31.85 in the 50 freestyle, recording her third best time of the season.

Alex Heaney and
Samantha Siegler teamed up the capture second place in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:33.03.
LEHMAN LIGHTNING UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pool on Saturday (Jan. 22), in the Bronx, New York taking on the Lehman Lightning. Race time is set for 1 p.m.
