WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS STATEN ISLAND, 3-2

STATEN ISLAND, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –– The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team defeated the Staten Island Dolphins 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 24-26, 15-13) in a non-conference battle Tuesday night in Staten Island, New York.  Old Westbury improved to 13-7 on the season as Staten Island fell to 2-10.  Old Westbury is now 2-2 on the year in five-set matches. 

Ashley Greene nailed down a personal-best 16 kills and tied a career-high with 12 digs to post her third double-double of the season.  #Tynisha George3 pitched in with 10 kills, her sixth double-digit performance of the season.  Greene also served up a pair of aces while Ruth Vargas and Nancy Barahona led the way with career-highs, four and three aces, respectively.  Nancy Apollonio led the defense with 18 digs while Kimberly Catania added 10 and Samantha Howley went for nine.  Kristina Giordano directed the offense with 22 assists, followed by Howley's 14, a career-best.

Ma Socorro-Calleja led all players with 18 kills for Staten Island.  Socorro-Calleja and Jean Lewandowski took team-high honors in digs with 18.  Jennifer Samuel dished out 17 assists and Gabriele Bradshaw followed with 13.   

Old Westbury came out on top after outhitting Staten Island .130 to .116 for the match, including .280 to .235 in the fifth-set.  OW finished with 51 kills, 30 errors and 161 total attacks to go along with 15 aces and three blocks.  Meanwhile, Staten Island earned 48 kills, 31 errors and 150 total attacks in addition to 11 aces.  The Dolphins scooped up 76 defensive digs, while the Panthers collected 65 digs during the match.   

HUNTER HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court for a non-conference match at home, entertaining the Hunter Hawks on Thursday (Oct. 6) in Old Westbury, New York.  First serve is slated for 7 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
