OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team lost a 71-70 Skyline Conference overtime thriller to the visiting Farmingdale State Rams at home on Wednesday evening. The loss moves OW to 9-8 on the season and 6-4 in conference play while the Rams improve to 13-4 and 9-1, respectively.
Both teams went back and forth in the opening half, combining for 10 lead changes as Farmingdale State took a 34-30 lead into the break. The Rams held the lead for the final 6:32 of the half, and went up 32-22 before OW replied with an 8-2 run over the final 2:26.
Farmingdale State grabbed momentum to open the second half by holding the lead for the first 9:31. Tavon McNair dropped in a layup to give OW a 45-43 lead with 10:20 showing on the second-half clock. After Farmingdale State tied the game at 49 with 6:28 on the clock,
Omari Trebuse's three-pointer capped a 9-0 for Old Westbury's largest lead of the game, 58-49. Farmingdale State answered back with an 11-2 run over the final 3:09 as AJ Matthews dropped in a layup with three seconds left to send the game into the extra frame.
Old Westbury scored the opening six points in overtime before Farmingdale State countered with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 6-6. Tavon McNair's layup with 11 second left tied the game at 70. Following his own miss, AJ Matthews went to the line with one second remaining and sank the second free-throw that gave the Rams a 71-70 lead en route to victory
Tavon McNair combined 21 points with a personal-best 21 rebounds to notch his fourth straight double-double.
Kerel Mitchell added 20 points and six rebounds while
Omari Trebuse followed with eight points, five assists and two steals.
Everard Bisnauth and Joshua Hill came off the bench to contribute eight and seven points, respectively.
AJ Matthews led the way for the Rams with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Dyshaun Flournoy (13 points), Josh Smith (11 points) and Ibrahm Johnson (11 points) scored in double-figures. Smith dished out a game-high six assists.
Old Westbury outshot Farmingdale State from the field 37.5 percent (30-80) to 36.6 percent (26-71). Old Westbury and Farmingdale State both connected on 6-of-26 from three-point land. OW enjoyed a 47-46 rebounding advantage, turning 18 offensive boards into 20 second chance points. Old Westbury converted 13 Ram turnovers into 16 points.
MARITIME PRIVATEERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for a Skyline Conference matchup on Saturday (Jan. 28) when they host the Maritime Privateers in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 2 p.m. inside the Clark Athletic Center.
