Old Westbury takes the opener 9-3 before falling 5-1 in the finale

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the St. Mary's Hawks, taking the opener 9-3 before falling 5-1 in the finale on Thursday afternoon from the Hawks Nest.  The split moves Old Westbury to 13-4 on the season, while sending St. Mary's to 13-8.   

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the first with three runs to take control of the game.  Brian Walsh stroked a single to center to score Brian Reutter and Anthony Orsano for the games initial runs.  Christopher DeGennaro followed with a sacrifice fly that scored John Angelino.  St. Mary's replied with a run scoring double by Corey Napier to cut the deficit at the end of the first.  Old Westbury answered with four more runs to take a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the second.  Anthony Orsano belted a three run homer, scoring Paul Valerio and Reutter while Angelino advanced home as Walsh stole second.  St. Mary's added solo runs in the second and fourth frames to make it a 7-3 game.  Old Westbury closed out the scoring in the seventh with two more runs, compliments of Blake Barbeito's single and Valerio's grounder. 

Brian Walsh (2-3, 2 RBI, R, SB) and Christopher DeGennaro (2-3, RBI, R) led the way for Old Westbury with multiple hits, while DeGennaro's double in the fifth inning extended his hit streak to 12 games.  Anthony Orsano (1-2, HR, 3 RBI), Brian Reutter (0-3, 2 BB, SB) and John Angelino (0-3) scored two runs apiece.  Paul Valerio drove in one and scored one, going hitless in four at bats, ending his hit streak at 15 games.  Zach Nadolny paced the Hawks with a 2-for-3 game, scoring one run.

Old Westbury starters Christopher Vitale gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks in three innings of work.  Matthew Andress (2-0) picked up the win after scattering two hits over four scoreless innings in relief of Vitale, fanning two batters.  St. Mary's starter Bobby Stouffer lasted just 1.2 innings, and was tagged with the loss after serving up seven runs (six earned) on three hits and four walks. 

Old Westbury held a 7-6 edge in hits, including 3-2 in extra base hits and 2-1 in stolen bases.  St. Mary's committed three errors compared to Old Westbury's one. 

In the finale, St. Mary's struck first in the second frame with a pair of runs off Tim Walsh, via the two run single by Luke Green.  Old Westbury jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth as Tyler Hammett lifted a sacrifice fly out to center to score John Angelino.  St. Mary's answered in the bottom of the fourth off an error by right fielder Angelino that allowed Green to cross the plate.  Two batters later, Zach Nadolny drove a two run single out to left field off Tyler Levine to make it a 5-1 game, ending Old Westbury's eight game win streak. 

Christopher DeGennaro extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the seventh inning.  Brian Walsh moved his hit streak to seven with a fourth inning single.  Zach Nadolny led the Hawks with a 2-for-2 game at the plate, driving in two and scoring one run.

Old Westbury used six different pitchers, throwing an inning each, while Tim Walsh (2-2) took the loss, after serving up two runs on three hits during the second inning.  Old Westbury recorded just three strikeouts compared to five walks.  Zach Nadolny started the game and picked up the win for the Hawks, working three innings on the mound with four strikeouts, giving up one run on three hits and one walk.  

St. Mary's outhit the Panthers, 6-4, while Nadolny's double marked the lone extra base hit of the game.  St. Mary's also snagged a pair of bases while both team committed two errors.

PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond for a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 24) on the road against the Purchase Panthers from Silver Lake Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in West Harrison, New York.
