www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – No. . 2 SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team fell 17-6 to No. 1 Farmingdale State in the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament Saturday morning in Farmingdale, New York. Old Westbury (27-10) will take on No. 3 St. Joseph's-L.I. at 4:45 p.m. while Farmingdale State (27-9 looks to defend their championship Sunday for the fifth straight season.
Farmingdale State scored first as Thomas Rydzewski led off with a single and three batters later advanced home on Terrence Bohanan's stolen base in the first inning. In the second, two more Rams crossed the plate as Farmingdale State took a 3-0 advantage. David Zilnicki scored Ryan McAllister as he grounded into a double play followed by Edward Bergmann's single up the middle, and scored after stealing second and third and advancing home scored on a throwing error by catcher
Anthony Orsano.
Brian Walsh scored on a balk for Old Westbury's initial run in the third, followed by a wild pitch that scored
Christopher DeGennaro. Farmingdale State answered in the third with four runs off three hits including Zilnicki's inside the ball park two-run homer that gave the Rams a 7-2 lead. Farmingdale State tacked on two more in the four, one in the sixth, three in the seventh and four more in the eighth as Old Westbury was unable to recover. In the fifth,
Blake Barbeito led off the frame with a single and two batters later scored off a
Brian Reutter sacrifice fly. In the eighth, DeGennaro stroked an RBI single to score Orsano and two batters later pinch hitter
Pat Amato worked a bases loaded walk to plate home
Jacob Coners. Old Westbury's final run came from
Paul Valerio, who led off the ninth with a triple and scored on an infield grounder by
Anthony Orsano.
Chris Sanabria (3-1) was dealt Old Westbury's loss, after working 3.2 innings, surrendering nine runs (five earned) off nine hits and two walks. Old Westbury relievers combined for 5.1 innings, giving up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits and four walks. Farmingdale State starter Anthony Eilers was yanked after just 1.1 innings of work in favor of reliever C.J. Bula (7-2), who earned the victory after going 5.2 innings, giving up one run off five hits and two walks.
Old Westbury tallied multi-hit performances from
Anthony Orsano (2-5, RBI, R),
John Angelino (2-4),
Brian Walsh (2-4, R),
Christopher DeGennaro (2-3, RBI, R) and
Blake Barbeito (2-4, R, 3B). Ron Remi led all hitters with a 4-for-4 game at the plate for Farmingdale State, including three RBI's and three runs scored. Ryan Levine followed with three hits and one RBI while Edward Bergmann (1-2, 2 R) stole a game-high three bases as the Rams outhit Old Westbury, 18-11, and controlled the base path with a 7-3 advantage in stolen bases.
