Old Westbury hosted Brooklyn and Staten Island in men’s and women’s competition

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's and women's swimming team competed in a season opening double dual against the Brooklyn Bulldogs and Staten Island Dolphins on Tuesday evening from the Clark Athletic Center.  The men's team earned a 68-27 win over Brooklyn and fell 56-39 to Staten Island while the women loss to Brooklyn, 51-44, and Staten Island 65-30.  

On the women's side, freshman Sandi Woodhead made her collegiate debut with a trio of first-place finishes by claiming victories in the 200 IM (2:30.28), 100 butterfly (1:07.25) and 500 freestyle (6:03.24).  Freshman Jessie O'Hagan also made a strong debut with wins in the 200 freestyle (2:24.06) and 100 backstroke (1:11.02) races. 

In the men's competition, the 200 medley relay team of junior Bryan Woodhead, freshman Justin Chu, junior Kareem Bryan and senior Cameron Russo started the season off with a 1:47.58 first-place finish. 

The relay victory sparked individual wins by Woodhead (50 freestyle – 22.01), Russo (100 freestyle – 51.82) and Chu (100 breastroke – 1:10.54).  Woodhead finished second in the 100 backstroke (56.43) to cap off his day and Byran added a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (55.60). Freshman Takis Kellarakos earned pair of second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:12.14) and 500 freestyle (6:23.76) events.  Also earning points for the Panthers with third place finishes were sophomores Santino Patrizi (100 breaststroke – 1:15.67; 200 IM – 2:36.79) and Tim Rice (50 freestyle – 26.08; 100 butterfly – 1:08.08).   


MARITIME PRIVATEERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the pool on Tuesday (Nov. 5) for a Skylien Conference opener at home with the Maritime Privateers.  First race is set for 6 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.
