Men’s Hoops Coast Past Maritime To Win 11th Straight

Old Westbury downed Maritime 82-62 to improve to 16-0 in Skyline Conference play

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball extended their win streak to 11 games after defeating the Maritime Privateers 82-62 in Skyline Conference action on Friday afternoon from the Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury (21-3) remains perfect in conference action, improving to 16-0, while Maritime (4-16) fell to 3-12 against conference opponents. 

Old Westbury earned a wire-to-wire victory after opening the 5:05 of the game with four triples to grab a 14-5 lead.  Tim McNamara scored all 10 of his points for Maritime in the opening 9:55 to knot the game at 17-all.  Rashawn McCarthy dropped in a layup with 9:52 remaining in the half to spark a 12-0 run over the next 3:31 to put Old Westbury ahead by 12, 29-17.  Five quick Maritime points cut the deficit to seven while a 10-2 Panther run closed out the final 3:29 to send Old Westbury into the break with a 41-24 cushion.

Josh Hill's layup 2:29 into the final stanza brought the Panther lead to 21 points and then used a 13-4 run to take a 62-36 advantage, their largest lead of the game.  Maritime replied with a 12-2 scoring spree from 11:09 to 7:41.  Old Westbury answered by scoring five unanswered points and coasted to a 20-point conference win. 

Kerel Mitchell and Darnell Chavis both poured in a game-high 19 points to lead Old Westbury.  Mitchell landed 5-of-12 three-pointers and Chavis grabbed seven boards.  Josh Hill hit 5-of-9 from the floor and finished with 14 points and two steals.  Rashawn McCarthy added 11 points and seven rebounds while Omari Trebuse dished out a game-high eight assists.  Ty Moore nabbed three steals to go along with five rebounds and four assists.

Ron Bethea scored 16 points to pace Maritime.  Sean Corley followed with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Tim McNamara finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. 

Old Westbury shot 50.7 percent from the field (34-67), 32 percent from three-point land (8-25) and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (6-9).  Maritime hit 36.7 percent from the floor (22-60), 28 percent from beyond the arc (7-25) and 73.3 percent from the charity stripe (11-15).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 37-32, scoring eight second chance points off nine offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury converted 17 Maritime turnovers into 21 points.  

ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS ON SENIOR DAY: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Tuesday (February 12) in a Skyline Conference showdown against the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles on Senior Day from the Clark Athletic Center   Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.  Prior to tip-off seniors Darnell Chavis, Rashawn McCarthy, Kerel Mitchell and Ty Moore will be honored for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics with a senior day ceremony.  Old Westbury will also be participating in the annual Play 4Kay day by sporting pink shoe laces and a pink warm up shirt.
