Game One: Old Westbury 9, Mount Saint Vincent 7
In a back and forth opener where the lead changed six times, Old Westbury scored twice in both the sixth and seventh innings to come from behind and defeat the Dolphins, 9-7.
John Angelino smacked the game-winning two-run RBI double in the top of the sixth inning, to reclaim the Panthers' lead to 7-6. Old Westbury added two insurance runs in the seventh, when
Jacob Coners laced a two-run RBI single, which saw both Angelino cross the plate from second base and
Brian Walsh swiftly running from first base for a 9-6 Old Westbury margin.
In the bottom of the second, Mount Saint Vincent took a 2-1 advantage. Keith Schroeher singled home Tim Hoxha to knot the game at 1-1, and he instantly scored on a Joseph Senisi base hit for a 2-1 Dolphins edge.
The Panthers knotted the game at 2-2 on a
Kevin Licul RBI single in the top of the third frame. Mount Saint Vincent regained their lead in the bottom half of the third. Mike Esposito was plunked to lead off the Dolphins' frame, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Jason Rivera drove in Esposito for a 3-2 Dolphins lead.
Old Westbury countered with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Eddie Hernandez and
Paul Valerio hit consecutive one-out singles to put runners on the corners. Walsh followed with a chopper, which was misplayed by Mount Saint Vincent, and resulted in Hernandez and Valerio both scoring.
After Old Westbury extended their lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth, the hosts once again answered back. In the home fifth, Kevin Coogan roped a RBI single to cut the Panthers' lead to 5-4. A few batters later, Senisi was hit by the pitch, which knotted the game at 5-5, and the Dolphins took the lead, 6-5, on a RBI sacrifice fly by Josh Sharpe.
The first three batters reached base for Old Westbury in the top of the sixth inning.
Jeremy Delgado led off the frame with a double and swiped third base.
Jonathan Pagan walked and then slid under the tag to steal second base. With two runners in scoring position, the stage was set for Angelino's heroics, as his double plated home both Delgado and Pagan for a 7-6 lead.
Mount Saint Vincent trimmed the lead in the bottom of the eighth, 9-7, however reliever
Alex DiSanto came in for the final 1.2 innings to record his seventh save of the season.
