(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team opened the season with a 69-60 loss to the Union Dutchmen on Saturday evening at NYU's Tip-Off Tournament from Coles Sports Center in New York, New York.  Old Westbury (0-1) will now face John Jay (0-1) at 5 p.m. in the consolation game while Union (1-0) will tip against NYU (1-0) in the title game at 7 p.m.   

Old Westbury jumped ahead early with a pair of Omari Trebuse three-pointers to take a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes.  Moments later, Dom Bostick connected on a three-pointer of his own to extend Old Westbury's largest lead of the game, making it a 9-3 contest with 14:38 showing on the first-half clock.  Ryan Whelpley sank a pair of free-throws with 10:40 remaining in the half to give Union its first lead of the game.  Both teams traded baskets down the stretch and combined for nine lead changes in the opening half as Union closed out the final 5:51 with an 11-5 run to take a 32-27 advantage into the break. 

Old Westbury got off to a slow start in the second half, scoring just four points during the opening 4:38 to fall behind 40-33 in the early going.  Down 51-42 with 10:54 on the second-half clock, Old Westbury used a quick 5-0 spurt to slice the deficit to four points with 9:51 left.  Union responded and built its lead up to as many as 11 points to outscore the Panthers 18-13 over the final 8:49 to claim the win.   

Trebuse led Old Westbury with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field to go along with four assists and one steal.  Jaquan Potter knocked down a career-best four triples to finish with 12 points.  Dom Bostick followed with seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and one block.  Justin Mize added seven rebounds while Kaleem Edwards registered five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.    

Deshon Burgess racked up game-highs of 21 points (7-12 FG) and 15 rebounds to go along with two blocks to spark Union's victory.  Hython followed with 17 points and Wade McNamara went for 11 while Whelpley pulled down 14 rebounds and swatted two shots.    

Old Westbury finished the game shooting 34.3 percent from the field (23-67), 31.3 percent from three point territory (10-32) and 40 percent from the free throw line (4-10) while Union hit 36.1 percent from the floor (22-61), 16.7 percent from beyond the arc (3-18) and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe (22-33).  Union won the boards battle, 54-36, while Old Westbury nabbed seven steals and converted just six points off Union's 12 turnovers.
