| By:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Former SUNY Old Westbury student-athlete Pedro Marquez (men's basketball) excelled academically during the past season and was honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as part of its 2019-20 Honors Court for the second-consecutive year, announced Wednesday afternoon. This year, recognizing more than 1,350 men's collegiate basketball student-athletes, the NABC Honors Court highlights the talents and gifts that these men possess on the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. Since 2011-12, Old Westbury has had eight scholar athletes recognized to the NABC Honors Court.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
  1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player
  2. Cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year
  3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution
  4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach
Marquez concluded his final season at Old Westbury with career highs of 18.8 points per contest on 43.9 percent (159-of-362) from the field and 81.7 percent (103-of-126) from the free-throw line to earn first-team All-Skyline Conference accolades. The Harlem, New York native hit on 34.2 percent (68-of-199) percent from three-point territory and averaged 4.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals to lead the Panthers to its 17th appearance in the Skyline Conference Championship dating back to the 2004-05 season. Marquez was recognized with various weekly honors throughout the season ranging from Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll (Dec. 9-15, Jan. 20-26, Feb. 3-9) and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Divisions II-III Honorable Mention (Feb. 3-9).

To go along with his work on the court, off the court Marquez put together an outstanding performance in the classroom. He has landed on the Athletic Director's Academic Honor roll three times and on the Skyline Conference Academic Honor Roll once. Marquez has graduated with a degree in business administration this past Spring.

Old Westbury was one of three Skyline Conference schools, including College of Mount Saint Vincent and Sarah Lawrence College, that was represented on the Honors Court.

About the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)
Located in Kansas City, Missouri, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Forrest "Phog" Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today's student-athletes. The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education.
