Women's Basketball Taken Down By St. Joseph's University-Long Island on Wednesday Night

PATCHOGUE, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was taken down by the St. Joseph's University-Long Island Golden Eagles on Wednesday night by a final score of 65-28. 
 
From the start, the Panthers were a few steps behind the Golden Eagles and ultimately could not keep up with the strong offensive performance of the 10-4 Golden Eagles. 
 
The Panthers scored the first points of the night with a jumper from Phalan Smith who was assisted by Allysha Thomas. The Golden Eagles controlled the scoreboard from there, scoring all of the points until the six-minute mark when Kasiobi Okenwa put in a layup off an assist from Tyela Davidson.
 
While the Golden Eagles continued to pile on their points, the final basket from the Panthers came from Thomas who hit a layup in the paint. The first quarter came to a close with a score of 21-7 in favor of the Golden Eagles. 
 
As the second quarter got started, the Panthers managed to put together a small run, but it was no match for the Golden Eagles who could not be slowed down. Thomas, Okenwa and Sierra Rowe connected on jumpers. Going into halftime, the Golden Eagles maintained their very comfortable lead, up by 24 points with a score of 39-15. 
 
In the third quarter, the Panthers struggled to connect on all of their shots, specifically from deep. OW shot five three-pointers, with Davidson hitting the lone three of the game in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles entered the final quarter ahead by 33 points. 
 
The fourth quarter featured much of the same, except many of the Golden Eagles' bench players saw the court. The Panthers were outscored by four points in the quarter however both sides only put-up points in the single digits. The Golden Eagles defeated the Panthers comfortably with a final score of 65-28. 
 
For Old Westbury, Phalan Smith finished with a double-double. Smith finished the game as the Panthers' leading scorer. She recorded 10 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Allysha Thomas also had a strong game on the glass. Thomas finished the night with 15 rebounds and was the game's leading rebounder. 
 
As a team, the Panthers shot just under 17 percent throughout the game from the floor. From behind the arc, the team was only able to hit one of 18 shots. On the other hand, the Golden Eagles shot 31 percent from the floor, and 34 percent from three-point range. 
 
The game's leading scorer was Casey Travers who hit four of six three-point shots and recorded a double-double. Travers scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds, five assists and a steal. Another strong performance for the Golden Eagles came from Julianna Knice who had 12 points and five assists. 
 
The Panthers will look to bounce back as they turn their attention to their next matchup. OW will next take on Purchase College on Saturday, January 13 at home in the Clark Center Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to start at 12pm.
