Women's Basketball Taken Down By Farmingdale State College on Thursday Night

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was defeated by the Farmingdale State College Rams by a final score of 55-38 on Thursday night.

The Panthers struggled to get things going offensively in the first half as the team only managed to put up eight points through two quarters of play. The Rams' offense was no match for the OW defense in this one.

The game got off to a hot start for the Rams. The Rams built up a 12-0 lead over the Panthers with only two minutes to go in the first quarter. The first Panther points of the night would come with just over 90 seconds to go in the first quarter of play off of free throws from Phalan Smith. The two points from Smith would be OW's only points of the quarter.

In the second period, the Rams continued to mount their lead. The Panthers' first basket from the floor in the game came from Kasiobi Okenwa as she hit a layup in the paint just under the midway point in the half.

After a good jumper from Phalan Smith and a few more baskets for the Rams, the first half came to a close with a score of 27-8 in favor of Farmingdale State.

Though the Panthers could still not stop the Rams' offensive attack, OW still mounted to pile on some more points. The third quarter finished with a score of 43-20 and the Rams ahead by a 23-point gap.

The fourth quarter featured much of the same with Farmingdale outscoring Old Westbury by only eight points. The Rams defeated the Panthers in this Skyline Conference matchup by a final score of 55-38.

Despite the loss, the Panthers' leading performer was Phalan Smith. She ended the night, after playing for the entire game, with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Tyela Davidson also scored 14 points and had three boards, three assists, a block, and a steal.

Both Allysha Thomas, and Kasiobi Okenwa were able to come down with nine rebounds each for the Panthers. Okenwa would also finish with three blocks.

For the Rams, Taneece Wooden scored 14 points and also had eight rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals. Another key performer for them was Mia Simmons who had 12 points.

As a team, the Panthers shot just over 27 percent from the floor and 22 percent from behind the arc. The Rams shot better from the floor with a shooting percentage of 34 percent but struggled from behind the arc, only shooting 15 percent from three.

OW committed 36 turnovers as a team compared to Farmingdale State's 21. The Rams capitalized off mistakes from the Panthers as they scored 24 points off turnovers.

The Panthers will move on and look ahead to their next matchup as the team prepares for another Skyline Conference battle against the University of Mount Saint Vincent. The game will take place on Saturday, January 6 at 11am in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
