Men's Basketball Defeats USMMA in Come From Behind Victory on Tuesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was victorious over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners by a score of 71-65 on the road on Tuesday night.
 
The Panthers now improve to 9-12 on the season and hold a conference record of 4-9.
 
The first half would belong to USMMA who started out with a 7-0 run and did not lose the lead for the entire opening half leading 39-28 going into the break.
 
The big difference in the first half was from the three-point line as USMMA hit seven threes compared to just three for Old Westbury.
 
In the second half the Panthers would jump out to a 22-9 run taking the lead for the first time in the game with 10:20 remaining. Old Westbury forced USMMA to go 1-6 from deep while hitting seven free-throws during that run.
 
The game would go back and forth where neither team would lead by more than three points, until the final two minutes. Zion Williams would hit a big three to take a 64-62 lead with 2:58 to go. Old Westbury would not look back, finishing the tight game on a 7-3 run to win 71-65.
 
Old Westbury outscored USMMA by 17 in the second half, fueled by 15 second half points from Amadi Lee-Kane, who played a full 40 minutes. The Panthers held the Mariners to just 20 percent from three-point range in the second-half, while going 14-15 from the free-throw line.
 
Zion Williams led the way in every major category for the Panthers, scoring 21 points, dishing out five assists and grabbing eight rebounds.
 
Next up, the Panthers return home to face St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn Bears. The Panthers won the previous matchup this season 72-57 on the road. Amadi Lee-Kane led the way in that game with 22 points where he hit four threes. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM on Saturday, February 15. Prior to the tip, the Panthers will honor their senior student-athletes.
