Softball Falls to SUNY Geneseo and Eastern Connecticut State on Monday at THE Spring Games; Alaina Reilly Reaches 100 Career Hits

LEESBURG, Fla – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was defeated in both games of the day at THE Spring Games in Orlando, Florida. The Panthers were defeated by the Knights of SUNY Geneseo, 10-1 then the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University, 8-0.
 
The Panthers now fall to 0-4 on the season and remain winless at THE Spring Games.
 
Game One - SUNY Old Westbury (1) - SUNY Geneseo (10)

Geneseo got on the board early, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first inning after a fielding error allowing Ray Schumacher to score. The Knights added another run in the top of the second inning on a double to left center by Katie Kuneth, bringing home Lauren Babich to make it 2-0.

Old Westbury responded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alaina Reilly doubled to left center and was replaced by pinch runner Stella Apuzzi, who stole third base. Madison Danin then singled up the middle to drive in Stella Apuzzi, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Geneseo pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring three runs. Sierra VanDerwarker's RBI single and Jane Reilly's double helped the Knights stretch their lead to 5-1.

The Knights sealed the game with a five-run sixth inning, taking advantage of Old Westbury's defensive miscues. Olivia Foglia-Leffl tripled to right center, followed by an RBI single from Kaitlyn Schmitz. Hannah Olejniczak reached on an error, which allowed two more runs to score. Sierra VanDerwarker capped the inning with a double that brought in two more unearned runs.

Layla Ramos took the loss for Old Westbury, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing nine runs (five earned) on 12 hits while striking out six. Hailey Ragozine came in for relief, giving up one run on one hit over 0.1 innings.

Offensively, Alaina Reilly led Old Westbury, going 2-for-2 with a double and a walk. Madison Danin recorded the Panthers' RBI with a fourth-inning single.

Despite the loss, Alaina Reilly reached 100 career hits with her double to left center field. 
 
Game Two - SUNY Old Westbury (0) - Eastern Connecticut State (8)
 
Old Westbury struggled to get their offense going, managing just three hits in five innings while Eastern Connecticut's bats came alive in the third and fourth innings.

After two scoreless innings, Eastern Connecticut broke through in the third. Maddi Sauve singled and later stole third, setting up Elizabeth Mitchell's RBI double to left field. Michaella Bowen followed with a double to right field, bringing in another run. Lily Kenefick added an RBI single to cap off the three-run inning.

Eastern Connecticut extended their lead in the fourth inning, scoring four more runs. Kaley Laird's bunt single drove in Julia Boya, and Elizabeth Mitchell's single to left field brought in Laird. A sacrifice bunt by Maggie Rubeck and a single from Sam Healy pushed the lead to 7-0.

The Warriors put on one more run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Maddi Sauve, sealing the 8-0 win.

Hailey Ragozine took the loss for Old Westbury, pitching four innings while allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits. Taylor Murphy came on in relief in the fifth, allowing one unearned run on two hits.

Offensively, Alaina Reilly, Madison Muehling, and Morgan Albright each tallied a hit for Old Westbury. The Panthers left just two runners on base and struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Next up, the Panthers will return to action on, Wednesday, March 19. Old Westbury will face off against Coe College followed by St. Lawrence University.
