Baseball Starts 2025 Season with Two Wins Over Penn State Berks; Petrucelly Blasts Walk Off Homer in Game One; Palumbo’s Late Single Wins Game Two

YAPHANK, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team began its spring season with two big wins over the Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks on Saturday. The Panthers took game one, 13-12 and won game two, 5-4.

The Panthers opened their season on a neutral turf at Lasorda Legacy Park due to field conditions at home. The afternoon was filled with win gusts and sunlight. 

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (13)- Penn State Berks (12)

 Between the two sides, there was a total of eight home runs in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader. 

Penn State got going early with the scoring as they found a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a double to left field that would score two. The Nittany Lions continued to pile on the runs in the second inning thanks to another double as well as a two-run homer. 

With a 5-0 deficit, the Panthers began to respond in the bottom of the second inning. Brian McCloskey scored on a balk for the Panthers' first run of the day. Following that, Angelo Velez would double to right center field to score Nick Giovanakis. RJ Azarieh would blast a three-run homer for his first home run as a Panther. Azarieh's home run tied the score, 5-5. 

In the bottom of the fourth, PSB responded right away with a home run of their own. 

Mike Petrucelly's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth would bring the game back to even at 6-6. 

The Nittany Lions saw another three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-6 lead. 

Petrucelly would see another RBI single for two RBIs in the bottom of the sixth. Donny Whalen, Giovanakis and JJ Palumbo would each also have RBI singles that would make it a 11-9 game in favor of the Panthers. 

In the top of the seventh, trailing by three, the Nittany Lions recorded three back-to-back home runs that would tie the game, 12-12.

In the first at-bat of the home side of the seventh, Petrucelly blasted a walk off home run to center field to give the Panthers their first victory of the season. The Panthers defeated the Nittany Lions, 13-12. 

RJ Azarieh went 3-5 in his OW debut with two runs, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Mike Petrucelly went a perfect 5-5 from the dish and recorded four hits, four RBIs, one walk and a home run. Nick Giovanakis and Angelo Velez each finished with two hits. Ricky Fasitta and JJ Palumbo also recorded a hit, both their first with the Panthers as well. 

On the mound, Louis Pizzileo got the start where he threw 68 pitches for five strikeouts while allowing five runs. Joseph Lubrano came in to close out the game and recorded the win. Lubrano saw two batters and struck them both out. 

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (5)- Penn State Berks (4)

The second game of the day featured less scoring and long balls despite the wind picking up. 

Penn State got the scoring going in the top of the third inning after scoring on an error.

The Nittany Lions poured on another run in the top of the fifth off a RBI double. 

Old Westbury would respond thanks to none other than Mike Petrucelly who singled up the middle for an RBI.

Later, in that same inning, Donny Whalen would hit a sacrifice fly that would score Palumbo to tie the game, 2-2. 

The game remained tied after seven innings. PSB tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning forcing the Panthers to spark more late game magic. 

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Old Westbury made it a one run game thanks to a single from Jose Duran who pinch hit and scored Whalen. First-year JJ Palumbo came to the dish with runners on and hit a two RBI single to right field to give the Panthers their second walk off victory of the day. 

Mike Petrucelly had another dominant performance as he went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. JJ Palumbo went 2-5 from the plate with two RBIs. Jose Duran went 1-1 as a pinch hitter to set up the Palumbo walk off. 

The pitching duties were split between Anthony Ponzo and Kyle Cavataio. Ponzo got the start and allowed just one earned run and four hits. In relief, Cavataio got the win while allowing no earned runs and one walk. Cavataio recorded five strikeouts. 

Next up, the Panthers will hit the road for a pair of doubleheaders. The Panthers will face off against John Jay College on Friday, March 7 followed by a road matchup against Lehman College on Saturday, March 8.
