Baseball Drops Two Games to Maritime on Sunday Afternoon

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was defeated in both games of Sunday's doubleheader against the Privateers of Maritime College. The final scores were 14-4 and 18-7, respectively.
 
Old Westbury drops to 9-7 overall on the spring campaign. The Panthers hold a Skyline Conference record of 0-2.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (4) – Maritime (14) [Seven Innings]
 
The Panthers struggled from the start as they gave up a combined 12 runs through the first two innings.
 
Maritime managed to tack on another two runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a two RBI double.
 
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with their first runs of the day. Old Westbury would score first thanks to an RBI double from Zachary Horowitz to score Donny Whalen. JJ Palumbo then walked to draw in another run. RJ Azarieh singled through the left side for two RBIs to make it a 14-4 game.
 
Neither side would score after the fourth inning. The Panthers could not overcome the early deficit and would fall to Maritime, 14-4 in seven innings.
 
JJ Palumbo went 1-3 from the plate with an RBI and a walk. RJ Azarieh had another strong game as he recorded one hit, one walk and two RBIs. Angelo Velez, Jose Duran and Zachary Horowitz would each also record a hit.
 
Kyle Cavataio got the start and faced 14 batters. Cavataio struck out one while allowing eight earned runs. Louis Pizzileo made a relief appearance. Pizzileo threw 2.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts. Jimmy Stroehlein would finish the game, allowing just one hit and no runs. Strohlien struck out one batter.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (7) – Maritime (18) [Nine Innings]
 
The Panthers found themselves in a similar position as game one as they allowed the Privateers to score seven runs in the opening inning.
 
Old Westbury would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning thanks Joe Morreale batting in Palumbo.
 
Trailing 7-1, the Panthers added another run in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers scored on an RBI double from Palumbo to score Jacob Taormina and Sean Maddi.
 
The next run from the Panthers came in response to Maritime's run in the top of the third inning. Dominic Felicetti hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Morreale.
 
Maritime scored once again in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run courtesy of Duran, who reached on an error allowing Morreale to score.
 
The Privateers had another big inning in the top of the sixth as they tacked on another five runs.
 
The Panthers were only able to answer with two runs of their own. OW scored thanks to a two RBI single from Morreale.
 
With a 15-7 advantage, Maritime would score again in the eighth and then twice in the ninth inning. The Panthers could not respond and would fall to the Privateers, 18-7.
 
JJ Palumbo had another strong game as he went 2-4 from the plate with two runs and two RBIs. RJ Azarieh recorded three hits and one run. Joe Morreale finished the game with two hits, two runs, two walks and three RBIs. Donny Whalen and Jacob Taormina would also record hits.
 
Thomas Lynch got the start and threw 2.2 innings. Lynch finished with two strikeouts and allowed eight earned runs. Anthony Ponzo, Jonathan Kortright, Justin Aramini, Nick Inzerillo and Dom Gerbasio would each make relief appearances.
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue Skyline Conference play. The Panthers will face off against the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, April 5. The game will take place at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex but it will be an official road game for Old Westbury. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 PM.
