Baseball Splits Skyline Conference Doubleheader with UMSV on Friday Afternoon

YAPHANK, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team split yesterday's doubleheader against the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent. The final score of the victory was 8-1 in favor of the Panthers and the final score of the loss was 6-11. 
 
Old Westbury now sits at 10-8 overall on the year. The Panthers hold a conference record of 1-3.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (8) – UMSV(1)
 
The Panthers were strong in all phases of the game in the opening game of the doubleheader. Old Westbury's first run came in the third inning when RJ Azarieh grounded out but allowed Dominic Felicetti to score from third. 
 
With a 1-0 lead, the Panthers tacked on more runs in the fourth as they scored three more thanks to an RBI single from Angelo Velez, a ground out from Jacob Taormina to score Nick Giovanakis and an RBI single from JJ Palumbo
 
Old Westbury continued their hot stretch of offense with a 4-0 lead. The Panthers would score two more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a wild pitch that would score Donny Whalen and another RBI single from Velez. 


UMSV would score their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning which would be a one run homer. 
 
Ricky Fasitta and Nick Mace each had RBI singles in the top of the sixth inning to give the Panthers an 8-1 lead. Old Westbury would hold on and walk away with the opening game victory in seven innings, 8-1. 
 
JJ Palumbo impressed once again as he went 3-4 from the dish with one RBI and a run. Donny Whalen also had a muti hit day as he recorded two hits and a run. Ricky Fassita was perfect from the plate, going 4-4 with two runs and an RBI. Angelo Velez finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run. 
 
Louis Pizzileo tossed the entire game where he allowed just three hits, one run and four walks. Pizzileo struck out two batters. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (6) – UMSV (11)
 
The Dolphins got started early in the second game as they would hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. With a 2-0 lead, the Dolphins would add three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. 
 
Old Westbury first scored in the top of the fourth thanks to a two RBI single from Jacob Taormina
 
With the score 6-2 in favor of the Dolphins, the Panthers closed the gap in the top of the sixth. The Panthers scored two runs on wild pitches as well as a hit batter. 
 
With the game now at 5-6 in favor of UMSV, the Dolphins responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth as a result of an OW error and a single.
 
Ricky Fassita continued is strong day in the eighth inning as he homered to left center field. 
 
Holding an 8-6 lead, the Dolphins scored three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Old Westbury was unable to come back and fell to UMSV, 11-6. 
 
Jacob Taormina went 2-5 from the plate with two RBIs and a run. Ricky Fasitta had another strong game as he recorded two hits, two RBIs and a run. Nick Mace had an impressive outing as he went 4-5 from the plate with a run. 
 
As a pitching staff, Old Westbury allowed 10 earned runs while striking out seven batters. 

Next up, the Panthers will continue conference play against the Rams of Farmingdale State College. Old Westbury will host FSC on Sunday, April 6. The first game is slated for 12 PM
