Softball Splits Non-Conference Matchup with SUNY New Paltz on Thursday Afternoon

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team split Thursday's doubleheader with the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz. The Panthers won the first game, 3-1 but fell short in the second game, 3-12.
 
The Panthers now sit at 8-10 overall on the season heading into conference play.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (3) – SUNY New Paltz (1)
 
The Panthers and the Hawks battled through the first three innings as the two sides remained scoreless. There was strong pitching and defense from both sides.
 
Old Westbury broke things open in the bottom of the fourth inning as Layla Ramos laid down a perfect bunt for a hit. Stella Apuzzi (who pinch ran) and Madison Muehling scored on a throwing error by the Hawks.
 
With a 2-0 lead, the Panthers added on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from Ashley Pierce.
 
Trailing 3-0, the Hawks rallied back to score a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
 
The Panthers would hold strong and prevented the comeback. Old Westbury took the opening game, 3-1.
 
Ashley Pierce impressed at the plate as she went a perfect 3-3 with an RBI. Madison Muehling and Layla Ramos also recorded hits.
 
Layla Ramos threw the entire game for the Panthers. Ramos allowed just five hits and one run. The lefty ace struck out four batters and walked three.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (3) – SUNY New Paltz (12) [Six Innings]
 
New Paltz came out of the gates strong as they scored a run in the opening frame of the second game on an RBI single to center field.

In the second inning, the Hawks tacked on three more runs thanks to a three-run homer.
 
With a 4-0 lead, New Paltz added three more runs in the top of the third inning.
 
Trailing 7-0, the Panthers answered with a run thanks to Alaina Reilly who singled, allowing Olivia Toto to score on another Hawks' error.
 
New Paltz had another big inning in the top of the sixth. The Hawks added five more runs.
 
The Panthers responded with some offense of their own. Madison Danin and Ashley Pierce would hit back-to-back doubles. Pierce's double scored Christina Ravo (who pinch ran). Olivia Toto then hit a sacrifice fly to score Faith Binaso (who pinch ran).
 
Despite some late offense, the Panthers could not come back and would fall to the Hawks, 3-12.

Madison Danin went 2-3 from the dish. Olivia Toto recorded a hit, a run and an RBI. Madison Muehling, Alaina Reilly, and Ashley Pierce each finished the game with hits.
 
Hailey Ragozine got the start in the circle. Ragozine allowed 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out a batter. In relief, Taylor Murphy allowed four hits and three earned runs. Murphy struck out two batters.
 

Next up, the Panthers are scheduled to open up Skyline Conference play. The Panthers
will play host to the Valiants of Manhattanville University on Saturday, April 12. The first game is scheduled for 12 PM from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
