Softball Splits Conference Doubleheader with Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team split Tuesday's doubleheader against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College. The Panthers fell in the first game, 5-0 but took the second game, 2-0. 
 
The Panthers improve to 11-11 overall on the season and hold a Skyline Conference record of 3-1. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – Mount Saint Mary (5)
 
Both sides were even after two innings as each starting pitcher was locked in. 
 
The Knights had a strong third inning which included five runs on three hits. 
 
Mount Saint Mary held their 5-0 lead as the Panthers saw numerous opportunities to drive in runs but were to no avail. 
 
The Panthers fell to the Knights, 5-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. 
 
As a team, Old Westbury recorded just four hits. Ashley Pierce, Madison Muehling, Phylicia Cangemi and Olivia Toto each combined for the Panthers' hits. 
 
Layla Ramos got the start in the circle. Ramos allowed six hits and five runs. She struck out one batter. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (2) – Mount Saint Mary (0)
 
The Panthers came out strong and found success swinging the bat. Despite a close call at the plate in the bottom of the first inning, the Panthers were unable to score a run until the third inning.
 
Old Westbury struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Pierce for an RBI to score Stella Apuzzi (who pinch ran)
 
The Knights were unable to spark anything on the offensive side of things. 
 
The Panthers scored another run in the fourth inning thanks to Madison Muehling who advanced on a passed ball, then stole home. 

The Knights recorded their first and only hit in the fifth inning of the game. 
 
The Panthers held on and took the second game victory, 2-0. 
 
For the Panthers, Madison Muehling went 2-3 at the plate with a run. Alaina Reilly recorded a hit. Ashley Pierce went 1-2 at the plate with an RBI. Zoe Rivera impressed as she was a perfect 3-3 at the plate. 
 
Hailey Ragozine was locked in from the start. Ragozine allowed just one hit while striking out four batters.
 
Next up, the Panthers will remain at home and continue Skyline Conference play. The Panthers will play host to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's-Long Island. That game will take place from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex at 4 PM on Thursday, April 17.
