Baseball Drops Conference Doubleheader to USMMA on Thursday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY old Westbury baseball team was defeated in both ends of their doubleheader against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Thursday. The final scores were 9-2 and 13-0, respectively.
 
The Panthers now drop to 11-13 overall on the year and 2-8 in conference play. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (2) – USMMA (9) [Seven Innings]
 
The Mariners took an early lead in the first inning, scoring one run. They extended their advantage in the second inning with another run, followed by a third in the third inning. 
 
Old Westbury responded in the fifth inning with a run and added another in the sixth. 
 
USMMA's offense surged in the fourth inning, scoring five runs, and added three more in the seventh to secure a 9–2 victory.
 
For the Panthers, Joe Morreale finished with a hit and an RBI. Brian McCloskey went 1-3 at the plate with an RBI. Thomas Lynch got the start and would be the losing pitcher of record. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – USMMA (13) [ Seven Innings]
 
In the second game, the Mariners dominated offensively, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding runs in each subsequent inning. USMMA securing a commanding 13–0 win in seven innings. 
 
The Panther finished with just two hits as a team which were recorded by RJ Azarieh and Nick Mace. Jimmy Stroehlein got the start for the Panthers and allowed six hits and seven earned runs. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will face off against the Panthers of Purchase College at home on Saturday, April 19. The Panthers will honor their senior student-athletes before the game. First pitch from the Jackie Robinson Athletic complex is scheduled for 12 PM.
