Baseball Sweeps Yeshiva on Sunday to Pickup Two Conference Wins

TEANECK, N.J. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team defeated the Maccabees of Yeshiva on Sunday, twice. The final scores were 12-2 and 7-4, respectively.
 
The Panthers advance to 18-15 overall on the spring campaign. Old Westbury now holds a Skyline Conference record of 8-10.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (12) – Yeshiva (2) [Seven Innings]
 
The Panthers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, second and third innings. Old Westbury's first inning runs came thanks to two-run homer from Mike Petrucelly.
 
Old Westbury's second inning scoring came courtesy of a two RBI single from RJ Azarieh who allowed Jacob Taormina and Zachary Horowitz to score.
 
Yeshiva scored a run in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Ricky Fasitta scored on an error and Horowitz drew a walk for a run in the third to help grow the Panthers lead to 6-1.
 
Angelo Velez doubled down the right field line to score Brian McCloskey in the top of the fifth making it a 7-2 game.
 
Horowitz's sixth inning triple for an RBI made it a 9-2 lead for Old Westbury.
 
Azarieh, Fasitta and McCloskey each hit RBI singles in the top of the seventh to grow the Panthers' lead to 12-2.
 
Old Westbury would walk away with the big first game victory by a final score of 12-2.
 
Angelo Velez, RJ Azarieh and Mike Petrucelly each finished with two hits an at least one RBI. Petrucelly recorded two RBIs on his home run. Ricky Pasitta and Brian McCloskey would also record two hits each with two runs. Fasitta had one RBI while McCloskey had two.
 
Jimmy Stroehlein threw the entire game for the Panthers and allowed six hits and one earned run. Stroehlein struck out three batters and walked two.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (7) – Yeshiva (4)
 
In the second game of the day, the Panthers found themselves trailing 1-0 until the fifth inning as Yeshiva scored a run in the bottom of the first.
 
The Panthers scored their first runs courtesy of an RBI single from Nick Papageorge. In the same inning, Angelo Velez drew a walk to make the score 2-1 after five.
 
Sean Maddi would hit an RBI single to right field to score Jacob Taormina and grow the Panthers lead to 3-1.


Yeshiva was not done with their scoring as they responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
 
The Panthers had another big inning in the top of the ninth. RJ Azarieh would hit an RBI double and Velez reached on an error to make it a 7-2 game.
 
Yeshiva responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth but would be unable to complete their comeback.
 
The Panthers took the second game of the day for the sweep, 7-4.
 
Jacob Taormina finished with four hits, an RBI and a run. Sean Maddi recorded two hits, one RBI and two runs. RJ Azarieh and Nick Papageorge recorded a hit and an RBI. Mike Petrucelly finished with a hit and three walks.
 
Justin Aramini got the start and recorded the win. Aramini allowed three hits and no earned runs. Aramini struck out four batters while walking three. Anthony Ponzo threw 4.2 innings of relief as he allows five hits and three runs. Ponzo struck out five batters. Dom Gerbasio allowed one hit and finished with a strikeout.
 
Next up, the Panthers will face off against St. Elizabeth at home for a single mid-week non-conference game. The Panthers will host St. Elizabeth on Wednesday, April 30. First pitch from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex is scheduled for 6 PM.
