Softball Sweeps St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn in Skyline Conference Showdown on Tuesday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was victorious twice in Tuesday's doubelehader sweep of the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn. The final scores were 8-1 and 6-3, respectively.
 
Old Westbury improves to 18-16 overall on the season. The Panthers advance to 8-6 in Skyline Conference play.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (8) – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (1)
 
Old Westbury came out of the gates strong as they put up two runs in the bottom of the first, second and third inning.
 
Madison Danin got the scoring started as she grounded out for an RBI to score Madison Muehling. Alaina Reilly then would score on a passed ball to make it a 2-0 game.
 
In the second inning, Amanda Varela managed to score on a throwing error by SJBK. Reilly would then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Juliana Vasquez to score.
 
The highlight of the game, offensively, came in the third inning as Layla Ramos launched a two-run homer to center field to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.
 
The Bears responded with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning that cut the Panthers' lead to just five runs.
 
Old Westbury tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of an RBI single from Reilly and an RBI single from Ashley Pierce to score Phylicia Cangemi (who pinch ran).
 
The Panthers would close out the game and defeat the Bears, 8-1in the opening game of the day.
 
For the Panthers, the team finished with seven hits. Madison Muehling recorded a hit and a run. Ashley Pierce went 1-3 at the dish with an RBI. Alaina Reilly recorded two RBIs as well as a hit, a run and a walk. Layla Ramos recorded two RBIs with her home run. Madison Danin, Amanda Varela and Juliana Vasquez each recorded hits.
 
Layla Ramos got the game one start where she allowed just one run and four hits. Ramos walked one batter and struck out three.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (6) – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (3)

The Bears managed to get on the board first in game two.
 
SJBK would score on a walk with bases loaded to take an early one run lead.
 
The Panthers responded right away in the bottom of the second inning as Juliana Vasquez came up with a big two RBI single to make it a 2-1 Old Westbury lead.
 
The Bears responded right away with a pair of runs on a two RBI single to right field.
 
Madison Danin tied the game for Old Westbury with a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Alaina Reilly to score from third.
 
With the game tied, 3-3, the Old Westbury offense shined in the sixth inning. The Panthers would record three consecutive RBI doubles from Madison Muehling, Zoe Rivera and Reilly to make it a 6-3 game.
 
The Panthers managed to close out the game thanks to strong pitching from Hailey Ragozine in the late innings. OW defeated SJBK by a final score of 6-3 in game two.
 
Alaina Reilly had another impressive game as she recorded two hits, an RBI and a run. Madison Muehling and Zoe Rivera each recorded a hit, an RBI and a run. Juliana Vasquez had a strong night with a hit and two RBIs. Amanda Varela and Hillary Bennett each recorded hits and runs.
 
Hailey Ragozine was dominant from the circle. Ragozine allowed just five hits and three runs. Ragozine struck out nine batters.
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue Skyline Conference play with a matchup against the Maccabees of Yeshiva University. That doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, May 2 starting at 10 AM from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
