Baseball Splits Doubleheader against Farmingdale in Skyline Conference Battle on Sunday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader against the Rams of Farmingdale State College. The Panthers took the opening game, 2-1 and fell short in the second game, 9-2.
 
Old Westbury improves to 11-9 overall on the season and holds a conference record of 2-4.
 
Sunday's games were played on the campus of Farmingdale State College due to field conditions at Old Westbury. The Panthers were the designated home team and batted second.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (2) – Farmingdale State (1) [12 Innings]

In a thrilling pitchers' duel, the Panthers and Rams remained knotted up at 1-1 until the bottom of the 12th inning.
 
Farmingdale struck first on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI single in the top of the second inning.
 
The Panthers successfully loaded the bases in the fourth inning, allowing Nick Mace to walk in a run from JJ Palumbo.
 
Old Westbury faced trouble in the top of the sixth inning. Farmingdale saw a runner attempt to score from third but an impressive throw from Mike Petrucelly in left field prevented the run.
 
Neither side would score in the sixth or seventh inning. With strong pitching from both sides, specifically RJ Azarieh, who started the game as the designated hitter and came in to pitch in relief, the game headed to the 12th inning.
 
In the bottom of the 12th, the Panthers got a runner into scoring position thanks to a triple from Joe Morreale.
 
Angelo Velez was called upon as a pinch hitter where he would hit an RBI single to score Morreale from third, walking off the opening game of the doubleheader. The Panthers were victorious, 2-1.
 
JJ Palumbo, RJ Azarieh, and Joe Morreale each finished the game with two hits. Ricky Fasitta recorded a hit. Angelo Velez had the timeliest hit while also recorded an RBI. Nick Mace drew four walks.
 
Kyle Cavataio got the start on the mound where he threw six solid innings. Cavataio allowed six hits and one run while recording one strikeout. RJ Azarieh entered the game to pitch in relief. He earned the win and allowed just two hits. Azarieh struck out five batters.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (2) – Farmingdale State (9) [Seven Innings]
 
In the day's second game, the Rams got going first on the scoreboard. FSC added runs in the top of the second and third inning off RBI singles. The Rams would add their third run of the game in the top of the third on a throwing error by Old Westbury.
 
With a 3-0 lead, the Rams added three more runs in the fourth inning.
 
The Panthers were able to respond in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Petrucelly to score Azarieh.
 
OW was able to draw another walk to score a run thanks to Morreale who drew the walk to score Fasitta.
 
The Panthers had opportunities to score in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases, but due to strong relief pitching, the Rams were able to shut them down.
 
Unfortunately, Farmingdale was able to add three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.
 
The Panthers could not rally and would fall to the Rams, 9-2.
 
As a team, Old Westbury saw just three hits in the second game of the day. Ricky Fasitta recorded a hit, a run and a walk. Mike Petrucelly went 1-2 from the plate and finished with an RBI and a walk. James Reilly went 1-1 from the dish.
 
Thomas Lynch got the start and threw five innings where he allowed seven hits and three earned runs. Lynch struck out one batter and walked two. Anthony Ponzo would throw 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs. He also recorded a strikeout and a walk. Justin Aramini would get the final two outs of the game for the Panthers. Aramini did not allow a hit or run, but walked two batters.
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue Skyline Conference play. Old Westbury will travel to Newburgh, N.Y. for a matchup against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College. The Panthers and Knights will face off on Friday, April 11 beginning at 12 PM.
