Old Westbury opens the NCAA Tournament with Friday’s first-round matchup against No. 16 Susquehanna

INDIANAPOLIS --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team is headed to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania for the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III tournament this week

Susquehanna University (23-4) is the host school for the four-team pod.  The Panthers (19-8) will take on the host Crusaders in one first-round game Friday at 7:30 p.m. inside Houts Gymnasium.  Old Westbury is making its first NCAA appearance since the 2003-04 season.  The Panthers defeated St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) 63-47 in the Skyline Conference Championship game on February 27.  Ranked 16th in the national poll, Susquehanna returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993-94.  The Crusaders received an at-large bid after falling to Catholic University in last Saturday's Landmark Conference Championship game.

The other first-round game will feature Babson College (21-5) and Hartwick College (19-8) at 5:30 p.m. Ranked 20th in the national poll, the Beavers won the NEWMAC title by defeating MIT Sunday for their eighth tournament appearance.  Hartwick defeated St. John Fisher Saturday to capture the Empire 8 title, and will be making its 19th trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The winner of each first-round contest would move on to a second-round game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.  The cost of admission for all games will be $10 for adults and $5 for students, senior citizens and children. Children under two will be admitted free of charge.

The NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament features a 62-team field with 43 automatic bids, and 19 at-large spots.  The tournament continues March 11-12 at four sectional sites, and concludes March 18-19 with the semifinals and championship at Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia.  Click here for the full NCAA Division III interactive bracket.
